Show THE OGDEN STANDARD-EXAMINE- R OGDEN UTAH SUNDAY MORNING NOVEMBER 'l 21D 1953 Help Decide Farm Profits Feed is the largest cost item in most livestock enterprises Feed prices therefore have a decided influence on profits on most farms Much concern has been expressed by Utah livestock producers regarding prospective feed prices this coming winter because of lower production of hay and grain in Summer rains improved Utah and pasture feed prospects in range many areas but the extent of the improvement is difficult to appraise Here are the relevant facts: 1 Hay supplies nationally will probably be shorter than they have been since 1956 Compared to the bumper crop of 1958 both production expectations and carryover are down There was a large hay carryover last spring in all areas of the country contributing to USDA predictions that total supplies will be about the same as for 1957 and will be well above any year since 1953 except for the bumper crop of 1958 2 Feed grain supplies probably stand at an all time high level with a prospective Oct 1 supply of 254 million tons— up 3 per cent from the record year of 1958 3 National reports show that late July and August rains were scattered generously over drought areas and may result in a general increase in earlier estimates Hay estimates are most apt to be raised Rains brought an additional crop in many areas where none was expected Pasture conditions too were greatly improved thereby reducing hay requirements for the coming season TOO FAR ALONG Grain crops were generally too far along to be influenced by these rains this season Their influence may be shown on next year’s estimates of fall grains since there is a high correlation between August rains and grain yields the following season The other side of the equation can best be an pictured by explanation of the demand for feed We can look forward to a healthy feed supply as indicated but the demand for feed is expected to be unusually strong during the 1969-6feeding season because: 1 We have more livestock to feed— 3 above the reccent per ord number of grain consuming animal units for the record year of 1958 and 26 per cent more rough-ag- e
