Show TRAVEL * Standard-Examiner It’s easy to feel 80s nostalgia during a visit to Reagan Library for vacationing By ELOUISE SCHUMACHER SIMI VALLEY, Calif. — If you're feeling the least bit nostalgic about the 1980s, here's a place to relive the good ol’ days when recession and unemployment were but distant memories. At the recently opened Ronald Reagan Presidential Library in this northwest Los Angeles suburb, it’s not hard to get caught up again in the "80s, where fast and heavy spending habits meant prosperity without apparent re- percussion. Some The $57-million complex was ers? France? Italy? England? gathering ever of American presi- were Las Vegas (3 percent), New dents and their families. Four former chief executives and President George Bush, plus their wives and family members of Lyndon Johnson and John F. Kennedy, attended the gala dedication event at the library. Since then, library staff say visitor totals have exceeded expectations, up to 6,000 a day, attesting York City (2 percent), Arizona (1 percent) and other (10 percent). The sprawling library, which boosts 75,000 objects, is orga- nized chronologically, with furniture from Reagan’s Dixon, IIl., boyhood home and his varsity letter sweater from Eureka College starting the displays. Next up is Reagan the actor. Then pol- itics takes center stage, with displays such as the Peace and Freedom exhibit. If you’re not a Reagan fan, the laudatory treatment may become a little grating on the nerves. You'll hear the ever-present sound of Reagan’s voice, as he taped explanations for many displays. My nieces Melinda and Mary grewbored easily with the politi- cal details about Reagan’s two terms as governor of California and eight years at the White House. But they were interested in the personal information about Ronald Reagan’s romance and marriage with Nancy Reagan. The girls also spent time at the display of some of the 70,000 gifts to Reagan from ordinary citizens, such as the Seal of the President made with 6,500 finishing nails and the ostrich egg and music box which plays Hail to the Chief. The large wall schedules showing a typical dayfor the president and his first lady also won rave reviews. The hit of the library was the Oval Office replica, where everything is an exact-size remake (ex- cept for the original Reagan chair behind the desk). Reagan, 81, decorated his White Houseoffice in a Western motif, with toy soldiers and 12 miniature bronzed saddles. The desk, with its small sign “It can be done,” is not nearly the size I would have expected for the president. I heard someone wondering out loud why the desk was so clean. Though the library is a federal to be objective,” said the tour guide, clearly offended by the question. “I bet you probably wouldn’t find anything about the helicopter crash in Iran in the Carter library.” Oh. I learned later from friends who visited the Reagan library that there are a few sentences about the arms sales to Iran and such players as Oliver North in one display. When I couldn’t find any mention about the Iran-Contraaffair, I asked a tour guide whereit was. re consumption available. The least expensive room at the Peninsula is $265, at the Regent the tariff starts at $255. But there are smaller, far less grandiose hotels: the Beverly House Hotelstarts at $78 for a single and the Hotel del Flores rents at $46 for a single without a bath. Still, you get what you pay for, and for $46 you’re not going to find Godiva chocolates on your pillow at bedtime. Window shopping along the city’s famous Rodeo Drive is enough to make a consumer of even the most penurious. Shops such as Hermes, Van Cleef & Arpels, Cartier and Carroll & Co.
