Tho flrst Btep toward the settlement of differences differ-ences between the senate and house ou the Jo!nt resolution providing for tho election of Bcnators by direct vote of the people was taken today, when the senate decldod to grant a conference confer-ence and appointed Senntors Clark of Wyoming. Nelson of Minnesota and Bacon of Georgia as conferees to meet n similar committee of tho house, to bu appointed. The tight in conference will be over the acceptance of the amendment by Senator Brlstow and adopted lu the senate, which retains to the fedcrnl government the right to control the election of senators. It wJll be opposed op-posed by tho house conferees and advocated ad-vocated by the senatorB. With agreement in conference un-likoly, un-likoly, It 1b probable the entire question ques-tion will have to be fought out either In tho house or the senate on a motion mo-tion to concede the demands of cither cith-er body. |
