Show Officials Reveal Standards for Imported Labor Standards for employment of farm workers brought into critical labor shortage areas were announced an-nounced today by Alphonzo Chis-tensen, Chis-tensen, chairman of the Cache County USDA War Board. Admin-isrtative Admin-isrtative machinery for transporting transport-ing workers wil be completed early in September. The program, which is being developed de-veloped by the War Manpower Commission, the U. S. Employment Service, the Farm Security Administration Admin-istration and USDA War Boards copcrating lists certain conditions of employment which must be met before the Government undertakes the transportation of such labor, Mr. Christcnsen declared. These conditions include: Payment of prevailing wages, with a minimum of 30 cents an hour or an equivalent piece-work rate and a guarantee of employment employ-ment for at least 75 percent of the working time contracted. Minimum standards for housing must provide the equivalent of not more than three single workers or more than four family members to a 12 by 14 foot floor space, in addition to facilities for cooking, sleeping, laundry and adequate sanitary conditions. Rents must be agreed to before recruitment and included in the employment contract. con-tract. "Farmers of Cache county should be reminded that this nroram is for transporting domestic farm workers," M. Christensen said. "The program for hinging in agricultural agri-cultural workers from Mexico will be followed only when domestic workers are unobtainable." No minors can be employed, Mr. Christensen stated, except as permitted per-mitted by Federal and States laws and policies, and no children under un-der 16 will be transported unless they are members of a family of workers. Children under 14 cannot be employed. The Farm Security Administration Administra-tion will furnish transportation and subsistence over and above 200 miles. Growers or grower groups are expected to pay costs up to that distance. |
