Show Teachers Loyal t President William Green of the American Federation of Laboi 5 was hlssed and booed by delegates to the national convention ol ; ' the- American Federation of Teachers in Buffalo when he urged i ' the eviction of Communist and other subversive elements from the organization. Whilo it is unpleasant and unfortunate that there should be I ; such evidence of sympathy for Communism in the teaching pro-i pro-i ; tension, it is wen to remember that the Communistic element of ; the Teachers' Federation represents only a small part of the pr- ofession and is unrepresentative and deliberately misrepresenta- tive of the profession as a whole. ' ', The pleasant and fortunate truth is that the American teaching teach-ing profession has exceptionally high and patriotic standards and the men and women who comprise its membership are among ; the very finest people in national and community life. , The strongest proof of this is in the fact that there are mo re than a million teachers in American private and public sch- "uua lue i-ommunisusneltering and communistically in- clined American Federation of Teachers has only 30,000 rnemb- ; ers-and a considerable part, and perhaps a majority, ,of these ., 30,000 are either out of sympathy with the real identity of the I j' federation or are unaware of its true character. "' Communists and their sympathizers in any organization are i ... always vociferous, even as a minority; and, of course, the Com- , munist minority in the Teachers' Federation was displeased by i j Mr. Green's admonition that they "put their own house in ord- er," and by his blunt reminder that. j ' "There are in your midst some elements that are flirting wi- j , , th an economic philosophy that is contrai-y to American ideals " I : 11 is shameful that the subversive elements in the federation j are able to have or appear to have a dominant or prevailing voice in its affairs. j The rl basis that exists for criticism of the teaching , : profession as a whole is that it permits this disgraceful condi- tion to continue. 1 - The American teaching profession should, indeed,' put its house hou-se in order bv rirlrlino- iiif p ' - - o ui lto uuwuiuny ana unrepresenta tive Communistic minority. The great majority of American school teachers are loval, hnn- i . est, h.glv-prmcipled Americans, and have no more, and probably less, sympathy with Communism than the members of other pro-; pro-; ' fessions. 1 : These good Americans should either clean up the Communis-, Communis-, t.c : element in the federation or abandon it entirely, and create ' 1 ,1 ' PatriOUC "Sanations honestly representing . hem and worthy of them, and deserving of the same confidence .
