Show OUR AMOSEIEMTS BY ZARA BY BEE I Among the people of today there is still too large a group who are slaves to the radio, movie or light literature. Some girls spend their allowance on every movie that comes to town never considering whether it is worth ' their time or if it is o any value. Boys in our schools read comic magazines in every spare moment, while they axe eaiting their lunch, coming home on busses, wasting hours in the evenings when they should be sleeping or studying. Of course there Is a time and a place for such passive forms of amusements, but as recreation these forms are not to be compared com-pared with taking part in community com-munity plays, socials, chorouses, r-hnirs and snorts. i The curse of our day is commercialized com-mercialized amusements, especially espec-ially the passive variety which are usually pitched ait a low level for mass appeal. Such forms of recreation do not recreate one's health, feelings, or mental faculties facul-ties as do the more active forms of first hand participation. The pursuit of easy things make men weak. If one is only an observer of sports, or listens to those things over the radio, he misses the development of both body and character. Restful forms of recreation have their advantages, advant-ages, but a long drawn out dance or movie is a poor substitute to sleep. No form of recreation Is a complete substitute for rest. The tenseness and pressure of our present civilization is often intensified in-tensified in our forms of amusement. amuse-ment. Noise, a crowd, speed are a constant wear and tear on the nervous system. An English women was quoted as saying, "I can tell an American anywhere by the tenseness of the muscles of the face. Americans get old too soon." Most Americans need lessons les-sons in the art of relaxation. Many pt them need nine or ten hours of sleep per night instead of the customary "pick-ups,,. We should be less concerned with killing time, and more concerned with capitalizing upon opportunities. opportun-ities. As summer comes on, let us hike,' swim, dance, bicycle, play soft and hard ball, and engage en-gage in other vigorous clean sports, budgeting our time and money, so as to select with proper care movies, radio programs, and books, avoiding noise, crowds and speed; using our vacation for a rest. |
