We have been asked to write research reports on one of our favorite states in America. I have chosen to report on Utah. The reports will cover topics such as history, the three years that we have lived in Nephi and each year the program seems to just get better, we are excited to see the number of kids participating and the level of competition increasing. As we participated in the tournaments at the end of the season it was gut wrenching to watch these kids give their all for the entire game and so many of the games ended in a with or score even 0 2-- 0 0-- 0 culture, geography, jobs, and places of interest. The reason I am writing is to ask if you would publish my letter in your paper. I am hoping some of your readers will write to me and tell me about their experiences while living and working in Utah. I live in Southern California and am sure many things about Utah are different from where I live. Also, if any of your readers find time to reply, it would be great if they would enclose a copy of (Ctmes-Ccfo- a shoot out to determine a winner. It was exciting to see the teams, play as teams for an entire game with everyone playing and contributing. We are very happy with the cost of the program, kids are able to use their shirts each year. Sign up fees seem to be where they need to be and we love the idea of paying the more experienced players to officiate those who are younger. The money really benefits the community. As participation contin- - Nephi, Utah s ues to increase we hope our school district officials will see the desire of these kids to continue to participate in 9th grade and up as district sport. Healthcare workers should ' be vaccinated as should women who will be more than three months pregnant during flu season and chil- dren and adolescents, age 6 months to 18 years who are on chronic aspirin therapy. Vaccinations should be received by household contacts of people at high risk (including children) and those who work in settings where they might transmit influenza to those at high risk such as: Doctors, nurses, and other employees in hospitals and doctors offices, including emergency response workers; employees of nursing homes and long-tercare facilities who have contact with patients or residents; einployees of assisted living and other residences for people in high-risgroups; and people who provide home care to those in high-risgroups People in the following k k According to information posted on the Utah Department of Health Web site, www.health.utah.gov, influenza is a serious infection caused by a virus. Most often it is referred to as the flu. Influenza is not stomach flu which is vomiting and diarrhea. Influenza is more severe than a cold and comes on very quickly. It is spread through coughing and sneezing. Symptoms may include a fever, headache, sore throat, cough and muscle aches and pains. The influenza season usually occurs between November and March, but may occur earlier or later. It is important to avoid the disease because Influenza causes about 20,000 to 40,000 deaths in the US yearly and can affect anyone--evehealthy people. Influenza is most serious in small children, pregnant n women in the second and third trimester, people over the age of 50, and people with chronic disease. The best way to protect yourself and others is through vaccination. By avoiding the flu, you avoid giving it to other people around you. Every October or November, people in the following high risk categories should be vaccinated: Healthy children from 6 to 23 months of age; & Miiy people of all ages with chronic Holiday lighting categories should consider being vaccinated: Anyone who wants to lower his or her chances of getting the flu (the shot can be administered to children as young as 6 months); persons who provide essential community ser- vices (such as police, firemen, teachers etc.) and students or others in institutional settings (those who reside in dormitories). Flu shots are recommended for pregnant women since pregnancy can increase the risk for flu complications, and pregnant women are more likely to be hospitalized for those complications than women who are not pregnant. Flu shots are recommended for women beyond the first three months of pregnancy during the flu season. Immunizations are recommended for women if have medical problems they that increase their risk, such as women who are first-trimest- HIV-positiv- e. Pregnancy can change a womans immune system as well as affect her heart and lung functions. Those changes may increase her flu risk.
