According to figures compiled by the Federal Reserve Bank, consumer loan volume has shown increasing gains this year compared to last year. While, since January, 1977 the total consumer loan volume in Salt Lake City banks has increased steadily, by six percent, from $175 million in January to $186 million in May, last year the figure fell from $152 million in January to $150 in March, then rose to $155 million in April and jumped again to $160 million in May. Commercial loan volume tells a different story, this year. After falling from $399 million in January to $396 million in February, and again to $387 million in March, the figure began rising in April, reaching $408 million, and again in May to a total of $410 million. 450 400 350 300 250 Commercial loan volume seems to closely reflect real estate loan volume, both this year and last year. But, while last year real estate loan volume rose by only 3.8 percent between January and May, this year that figure has gained by 8.9 percent. 200 150 J F M A M 1976 The Fed reported reaching $401 million in real estate loan volume in Salt Lake City during May this year, compared to $368 million in January. Last year January's figure was $311 million, and rose to $323 million in May. Authorized new single family dwellings 1977 Salt Lake City -- ment, authorized construction during May reached a total of $16.3 million dollars, $6 million of which went toward an airport terminal being paid for by the city. May's figure is the highest since February, when a permit was granted to the county to construct the $10 million performing arts center and the total construction figure reached $17.5 million. 20 During this same period last year, construction activity was sluggish and totals were low. Of the shops and warehouses, the largest cost $1.1 million.
