Show Millard Tenna Johnson of Sutherland is retiring from the Delta branch of First Security Bank after 20 years of service Tenna was born and raised in Deseret and is the daughter of George and Carla Jensen She graduated from Hinckley High and married Don Johnson of Sutherland The couple raised three children: Dennis C Steven B and Shauna Dannelly before Tenna began her banking career She originally planned only to work for a few years while the kids were away to college but as she says “It was so fun decided to stay” She began work in 1966 when First Security was the only bank in West Millard and was located in the old city offices next to City Cafe on Main Street “I have worked as bookeeper teller proof operator and accounting assistant” she said Her career was marked by many changes “We have gone from being the only bank in town to just one among the crowd but the most significant change has been in how we do business It use to be that decisions were all made on a local level we did Now we mostly here everything prepare information for the main offices in Salt Lake” she said Tenna Johnson Tenna did not have to retire but she said that she wants to take time to “smell the roses” and pursue her love of gardening sewing and spoiling her nine grandchildren who range from ages two to 18 Tirst Security employees have planned an open house Wednesday Dec 24 to honor Tenna All her friends are vited to stop by by Dawn Carder Picture in your mind an elegant such as Tiffany’s in jewelry New York City You might imagine an impressive edifice that houses display cases filled with unique rare and exbroaches pensive rings pendants item that would fill your earrings-ahearts desire You might also imagine somewhat stuffy employees that that tempt to impress the acknowledge you with reverence if you es that may treat you are a with condecension if they assume you are ordinary To such an environment you may or may not want to return Now go to another store It is much smaller and it is located in Delta Utah a small western town Like Tiffany’s this store has unique and beautiful jewelry whose elegance may be viewed in display cases that have been arranged tastefully and with care Like Tiffany’s rare gifts are available to fill Christmas wishes of both men and the Here you may think women similarities end The similarities end for the smaller store Tina’s Jewelry and Minerals has a warm congenial ambience as well as quality and uniqueness Each and every person who enters is encouraged to look around chat and just “enjoy” Knowledge of gems is openly shared with any interested party Personal attention and help are given in a genuine manner to lookers and buyers alike Social status is unimportant The store’s history is interesting Approximately ten years ago a man approached Ted Harris with some red stones for faceting The stones it turned out were red beryl- -a rare form of emcrald-tnewest of gems The red beryl was being mined only one place in the world-tViolet Claims in Utah’s Beaver County One thing led to another Ted learned that the owners of the mine wanted and to sell He was interested his brother Rex eventually became the This owners of the Violet Claims meant that they had a gem offered by no one else About this time Tina Nielson Rex’s daughter decided she too wanted to facet After all she was good with her hands and she considered herself to be fairly creative She approached her Uncle Ted himself wanting to learn from him The lessons began Much to Tina's surprise faceting was all math intricate demanding lots of figuring It also took planning patience and real skill for it was essential to get the maximum yield out of each stone She had all the prerequisites For a few years Tina worked with and learned from her uncle Then neighbors and friends aware of her work began to ask her to make rings and other pieces of jewelry for them She agreed working at home often with her younger son sitting on her lap This continued for several years Two years ago Rex Harris retired from Utah Power and Light From his involvement and interest in the mine red beryl and other precious gems coupled with Tina’s knowledge and skill faceting and making jewelry the idea of a jewelry store was conceived and born Delta had a need for such an establishment Tina's Jewelry and Minerals is located on West Main Street in what was formerly an insurance office and Rex his a doctor’s waiting room carpenter son Dan and Tina completely remodeled the area putting in an entirely new inside In May of 1985 the new store opened its doors for business Formerly Deltans had had to travel to buy engagement special rings jewelry items or to have repairs on choice pieces Now they could do it all at home The new business with Rex and Tina partners was a success Tina’s ability to do repairs and to do them well was what got it going What was anticipated as two or three days of work a week immediately became full time!
