Show Page 4 - Millard Coaaty Thar USPS 4 Aag 1987 Millard Places Sugarville NOTE: Tb foflowiag from Milestones history ap to 1952 excerpt was Millard a takes of Sugarville is twelve miles northwest Delta and was settled in the year 1911 It was first called Alfalfa Omaha then later it was changed to Sugarville The Townsite was laid out in lots by the Delta Land and Water Company and with every forty acre farm sold a lot was given free Two stores a lumber yard and hardware store combined a school house and library hall comprised the townsite The stores lumberyard and library hall were built about 1915 The purpose in coming was to get established on farms Families were anxious to get out of cities A great many people came from California and settled around Sugarville After about two years some were disappointed in the soil conditions and left losing all they had invested Most of these people had been and began in earnest to build their homes rail brush and develop the land Much of the land six or seven miles north of Sugarville was of no commercial value and should never have been brought into the project Those closer in around Sugarville seemed to be more fortunate in their selection of land James Shields Isaac Losee and David Clark are three of the first settlers coming here in 1911 and 1912 The soil was rich in minerals and was formerly covered with greasewood The land was quite productive in grain raising the first two years Quite an acreage of beets was put in during the early of years Finally the land was planted to alfalfa after a great deal of difficulty A fair crop of hay and a bumper crop of Alfalfa seed was produced in 1925 and 1926 One farmer threshed two hundred bags of seed from acres and sold it for $4000 Another threshed two hundred and twelve bags from a short forty acres but these two forty acres have produced practically nothing since 1926 Hay has been getting shorter each year there has been very little seed because of the dry condition and drouth has cut the water supply Some of the farms became waterlogged and a draingage system was put in in 1920 The farmers paid a great deal of money for the drains The first school was built in 1912 It was a frame building The first teacher was John Reeve of HinMrs ckley Later Mrs Cronholm ED Cady of Sugarville and a Miss Bird from the northern part of the state taught one term each By this time there were too many pupils for one teacher so the school house was moved to a better location and one of the old store buildings was bought and added to it Mrs Etta Underhill and her niece Myra Underhill were then hired Miss Myra taught the first four grades and Mrs Underhill taught the fifth sixth seventh and eighth grades Mr and Mrs NE Neely Mr and Mrs and Mr and Mrs Smith Seegmiller were the last teachers that taught in Sugarville In the fall of 1929 the districts were consolidated and Sugarville grammer grades were taken by bus to Sutherland The high school students were taken by bus to Delta West Millard Historical Society On July 15 a group of interested citizens met and selected the organizing committee for the West Millard Historical Chosen were: Society Killpack on July 22 at which time members and worked on projects discussed the possibility of a museum for local pictures A repository and artifacts is needed manuscripts Anyone interested in participating in the West Millard Historical Society call Dorothy Killpack may Charlotte Ruth Rawlinson or Pat Trujillo Morrison or Morrison Rawlinson Keyser Site Chairman-Pa- t Trujillo Fort Deseret Project Eliason The organizing committee again met Millard County Fair Schedule Deseret Utah 1987 Thursday August County Fair Bldg Entry of flower and vegetable Joyce Scottorn Entry of flower and vegetable Millard East Entry of flower and vegetable exhibits Extension Office Fillmore to 10 am Judging of flower division and vegetable public 1 pm Concessions begin pm I pm Millard County Fair opens: Exhibits open to public from pm Senior Citizen Day at the Fair Activities are being planned for entertainment games contests etc for our seniors to participate inCome and join us for Horse members only Open to 4 pm public to view 6 pm Millard County Parade Friday August 7 Kids Day at tha Fair 10 am -
