is an advanced electronic switching center known as Autovon or Automatic Voice Network The local operation and a similar one located in the Sierras above Topaz Lake in Nevada are owned by Continental Telephone Company Both are part of the worldwide governmentally installed supervised and controlled Autovon System within the Department of Defense The idea for the service was conceived in 1963 as a way to consolidate the communication numerous military systems into one more positive network Assuming there are no problems the the Autovon system provides government a guaranteed path through the machine at all times Applied solid state electronics make possible speeding up the switching process practically to the speed of light the heart of each Comprising Autovon switch is a complex and compact series of carded circuitry and relays woven into the switch matrix coming calls are automatically screenrouted connected ed for importance and verified for transmission acceptability within two to ten seconds to any one of the Autovon stations in the world The Delta Autovon was built approximately twenty years ago according to employee Roger Bliss and it was the first electronic switching center in Utah The switch was brought up and installed by Automatic Electric and the 7500 square feet building of reinforced concrete was constructed with of Salt Lake Skyline Construction City as the general contractor At the beginning of the project worked along with employees Electric of Automatic employees There were technicians from all over the country as well as a few local people who had qualified for positions Those hired had some background in electronics and they were required to attend 490 L Autovon Training at any one of several training location across the country Length of courses varied For example Roger Bliss attended for nineteen weeks in Chicago and George Dutson spent three months in Terre Haute Indiana Locally Roger Bliss has the most seniority for he began with the project twenty years ago At that time there were nineteen employees Today due o nn& SHERIFF ED PHILLIPS awards Robert as Commissioner AB Sheriff's badge Nielson a looks on The badge out of maintenance unless there is a major problem within the network They handle the test board The men on the other two shifts are responsible for repairing anything that is broken during the day Contel's Allen Wardle is the District Manager of the Delta Autovon and the supervisor is Fred Jackson The other employees are Roger Bliss LeRoy Fowles Dean Redd Gil Trujillo George Dutson Bob Jones and Bruce of the eight onTaylor (Interestingly site employees six are Delta natives) Many school and civic groups have toured the local site over the years There are also annual government and visits at which time the customer coordinate military and customers operations and suggestions To the technologically uneducated a tour of the Autovon building is overIt is whelming as well as informative overwhelming for the system is so complex There are many operating comand machines for puters terminals which only eight men must assume total understanding and responsibility Teletypes print
