Show Millard County Business of the Week the services of his son Arthur The latter a graduate of BYU was working as a CPA for an accounting firm in Art Nevada Leaving his position returned to Delta and a family corporation was formed Soon after the formation of the new the Jefferys bought a corporation store in Ely Nevada which son Glen by Dawn Carder A s only as good as its people It is after all the people who design who determine the character who “make or break” a Delta has place Over the years boasted of spirited hardworking telligent and enterprising individuals--toquality people At the top of the quality list are Orvil and Donna Jeffery founders of the town’s Quality stores The Jeffery roots go back a long way and are firmly entrenched in the alkali soil of Millard County Orvil was born in Wayne County but moved to this area when he was just eighteen months old His father had acquired land with the Delta project so the family settled down to farming Alfalfa small grain feed for the animals and cattle were raised Donna Jeffery was born in Canada and raised in Cache County Utah Around 1920 she moved to Delta met and married Orvil and according to her “lived happily ever after!” The histories of Delta and the Jeffery family just seem to be intertwined for the family has been an integral part of the community for years and years Both combined “elbow grease” with as they farming and entreprenuership established themselves and grew Orvil and his brother Eldro had a truck line on which they began by hauling ice In 1935 the two bought the grocery store located on West Main Street in Delta from the International Credit Association With John A Day the Jeffery brothers formed a corporation 'and opened' for business in 1935 The building was February 16X60 feet and meat and groceries were sold Two years later the men bought the Old Central Market (the east side of the Store) present Courtesy Hardware There they installed a frozen food locker plant which reports Orvil was one of the first locker plants in the state of Utah Meat processing cutting and wrapping services were provided for customers and Donna admits that she spent “lots of time” there helping with the work two to three years Approximately later Orvil Jeffery bought out the other stockholders and ran the entire operation as a personal business Donna was busy raising children (seven in all) but she recalls “Whenever someone was needed to help I dropped everything and went to work” Side by side she continued to work with her The husband over the years eventually doing all the office work The business empire was to expand several times Around 1943 according to Orvil a fire changed the course of events While working in the baement he was notified that there was a fire in the Wright Variety Store next door CCC Camp volunteers along with local people formed a fire brigade for there was no truck or pump at that time It was a big fire but by 2 pm that same afternoon Orvil reports that he was “back in business” Shortly after the fire expansion of services began World War II was in progress the Japanese relocation camp (5th largest city in Utah says Orvil) was in operation and there was a marked increase in business “Truckloads of people came in to shop” Orvil related “We expandeu the locker and ice facilities to meet the demand We supplied seven to ten tons of ice per day for the camp” (He also had contracts with the CCC camps) The Jefferys formed many friendships with the Japanese people from the Topaz site They hired a Japanese fish specialist to advise on fish and fresh supplies arrived daily for the customers Orvil also hired some of the young men to work as clerks in the store and eventually several lived in the Jeffery home With greater needs Orvil put an addition on the store extending the building in the back In 1961 her purchased the Wright Variety Store and a little later Ije bought the Workman store “I had one of the first refrigerated produce cases in the state” said Orvil “And I built it myself” The Quality complex then offered f groceries meats hardware and appliances Orvil and his sister also bought the local bakery where they made the first 10 cent malted milk to be sold in Delta! “I worked in the store during the day” Orvil remembered “then served ice cream in the evenings” After the war Orvil began to sell the Frigidaire brand of household appliances He took a course offered by the company which enabled him to service all that he sold Donna was his going out to homes and partner the appliances Both demonstrating with the help of other talented commade radio munity people commercials The expanding business ventures additional demanded energies and time In the mid 1960s Orvil enlisted managed Everything there ran smoothly for three years Then local labor problems forced wage declines and a closing of the store The next venture was the purchase of a store in Nephi which Glen also managed Reports Donna “Orvil and I were in Arkansas on a mission at that time Glen would call to work things out and he and his father would talk for an hour! Still the cost of the call was less than a repairman’s fee” Approximately ten years ago the new 20000 square feet store located on East Main Street was built Using all rebuilt Eldro and Orvil installcompressors ed all the equipments Six years later another store was built in Milford Rawlinson painted murals in both stores and Art helped with the decorating In the early 1980s the corporation changed its make up by offering shares of stock to the employees Since then Art Jeffery has been the President and Dave Young is the Orvil is the Secretary Last year Art moved himself and his family to Provo where he is working toward a graduate degree in social work His absence puts the store management primarily on Dave responsibilities Young’s shoulders feel that The senior Jefferys businesses and merchandising are different now than in years past “Both lack the personal touch” they lament “Suppliers used to help us with big promotions and everyone worked together That’s all changed” The overall effect of IPP according to Orvil has been most favorable to the community Yes the “boom” and the “bust” had their effects but “there is still lots of opportunity here Delta has a good business future” Professionally and personally Donna and Orvil Jeffery have made signifito Delta An accant contributions complished poet she has taught church classes and she has been in all the times this summer Oak Creek above Oak City will be stocked three times this summer with a total of 4500 rainbow trout The trout stocked in our area are raised at the Glenwood hatchery in Sevier County If you are curious on what is involved with raising thousands of fish the public is welcome to tour the facility Generally stockings occur just prior to major holidays Although Oak Creek hasn’t been stocked yet there are still plenty of trout in the stream Besides rainbow trout Oak Creek has a nice population of naturally German brown trout reproducing There have been some nice browns caught in the pools downstream from the campground Rumor has it that Mormon crickets are good bait for the larger trout Whether you fish locally or elsewhere in the state be sure to check the current fishing proclamation in case there are special regulations in the water you are planning to fish Parents are reminded that residents 6 through years of age do not need a license nor do they have to be with a licensed angler Their daily bag limit is the adult daily bag limit A lot of parents aren’t aware of this and think they need to have a license in order foi their children to fish Children under 6 years of age must be with a licensed angler Adults who rarely get out to fish mav be interested to learn that Saturday is “Free June II Fishing Dav" Anyone may fish regardles of hav ing a fishing license All other regulations will still be in effect Due to the variety of fishery management objectives throughout Utah the regulations have become more complicated in recent years These management objectives have resulted in some fine fishing them opportunities-enj- Manti Temple Centennial May the Manti Temple is rapidly approaching Saturday May 21 looms on the horizon with many exciting and
