competition Clen Swallow Tonya Strong MHS students win at Central Utah Deseret News Sterling Scholars Thursday April 8 at Snow College was the annual Central Utah Deseret News Sterling Scholar Awards Night from Millard High Five students School were winners Julie Limburg won in Social Science and Glen Bonnie Swallow won in Vocational in English Baugh was a runner-uin Tonya Strong was a runner-uHome Economics and Loren Taylor in Foreign Language was a runner-uThese students are to be congratulated for their success As winners and runners-uin the Central Utah Deseret News Sterling Scholars competition they are now eligible for scholarships from almost all of the colleges and universities in the state and surrounding areas Each of the 12 Sterling Scholar candidates from Millard competed against thirteen other schools in the central part of the state The students were judged on their scholarship and leadership They each prepared a portfolio listing Loren Taylor their accomplishments in their particular category Three judges from universities around the state judged their portfolios and then interviewed each candidate Each student represented Millard High School well We are of their acproud They are all outstancomplishments ding young men and women and deserve to carry the title Sterling Scholar Four of Delta High’s Deseret News Sterling Scholars won honors at the on Thursday regional competition April 7 at Snow College by being namin their divisions Each ed runners-uwill receive a $10000 award and scholarship opportunities Aleta Boardman Aleta is Delta High’s Science Sterling Scholar She received a scoreof 33 in science on the ACT and a composite score of 30 Aleta is ranked 6th in the senior class and has a GPA of 3829 Aleta attended Girls’ State and is the secretary of the National Honor Society She also attended the Summer Scientific Seminar at the Air Force Academy during the summer of 1987 She received a congressional nomination from Senator Jake Garn to the Air She is planning on Force Academy in chemical engineering majoring Aleta attributes her success to her excellent science teachers Miss Reeve Mr Judd and Mr Jacobsen She is the daughter of Gene and Pat Boardman of Hinckley Murray Clay Murray is the Sterling Scholar in mathematics He received a perfect score of 36 in mat! or the ACT and a composite of 32 Murray is ranked 1st in the senior class and has a GPA of 3994 Murray was nominated and appointed to the Air Force Academy by Senator Jake Garn He also received nominations to West Point and Annapolis He ranked in the 99 percentile in all areas on the ASVAB test and was for National Merit a Scholar Murray is an Eagle Scout a member of the math team and the Academic Decathlon team National Honor Society member Boys’ State Hugh O’Brien Leaderrepresentative and high school ship representative valedictorian Murray is the bugler for the American Legion He is the son of Neil and Jill Clay of Hinckley Guy Gonder is the vocational Guy Gonder He is the Future representative Farmers of American (FFA) President for the Delta chapter He is also the senior class secretary Guy has receivand FFA ed numerous awards in especially in the areas of livestock judging and parliamentary procedure Guy is the chairman of the parliamentary procedure team Guy is ranked 1th in the senior class and maintains a GPA of 3795 He received a composite ACT score of 27 In his spare time Guy raises and sells sheep and feeder steers Guy has taken many vocational classes both at Delta High and West Central Utah Vocational School He made a prizewinning gun rack that took 2nd place at the SUSC competition He is a FFA State Farmer the highest degree awarded within the state Guy is the son of Owen and Patricia Gonder of Garrison Brian K Holman Brian is the Sterling Scholar in business He received a composite ACT score of 28 He is ranked 8th in the senior class and maintains a GPA of 3795 Brian owns and operates his own NEW Council members on March Utah State University in Logan Jason Jacobson and Katrina Hirschi learned how to organize and carry out a Youth City Council at the conference Most of this was done through an Idea Fair which consisted of presentations from seven active Youth City Councils from other Utah towns "These provided many ideas to help Honor students announced begin our own Youth City Council” Hirschi said Jacobson said the youth attending exhibited a lot of the conference enthusiasm “In watching the other Youth City Councils it was evident that there was great success in the program and it benefited city officials and people in the towns” Jacobson said Fillmore City Suzanne Limburg said the conference Councilwoman was verv enjoyable and that the Fillmore teens brought back a lot of good Beth Stewart After weeks of anticipation and hard work tryouts will be held at Delta High on April 15 Out of more will r than forty girls only pass the judges’ tests going on to be Delta High The girls work weeks in advance to leant a prearranged dance and make up sixteen counts of their own The polish these routines along with splits and kicks which they must also perform before a panel of judges This year Melody McWilliams has worked with the girls trying out teaching them a dance she made up The general concensus of past present and future seems to agree with senior Kristi Crapo’s opinion when she said "It’s a lot of hard work” The girls trying out are quickly becoming aware of this as well as the seasoned veterans trying out for Among these is Kathy again Anderson a sophomore She summed it up saying is a lot of work and effort but usually it all pays oft You get to know a lot of girls with a lot of different personalities and it’s a lot of fun” TIP OF THE WEEK: Tbe tryouts judges Then they were interviewed This counted as 50 percent of the final vote The rest of the total vote was from student body voting At the March 30 assembly the student body and public were invited to attend and view the cheerleader hopefuls perform many cheers they including one themselves choreographed During a short assembly conducted released by the now cheerleaders the cheerleaders were finally announced The junior cheerleaders are Shelley Draper varsity Andrea Dutson Holly Dutson and Chris Bloomfield Those elected for varsity cheerleaders are Sandy Petersen Amie Alley Lisa
