Show EDITORIAL NOTES. The legislature will probably adjourn tomorrow (Friday), after a very strenuous stren-uous session In which very much of the work has been crowded Into the Inst week, with very unsatisfactory results. The liquor bill did not pass last week, but was called up for amendments, and after being buffeted between the two houses for some time was finally passed. The chief amendment amend-ment carried, and one insisted upon by the governor, who has had alto-gethed alto-gethed too much to say in shaping legislation, was one requiring applications applica-tions for saloon license in cities to be passed upon by the district Judge. We are generally opposed to taking the power out of the hands of city councils, but In this case we think It was Justified. Justi-fied. The saloon business in Salt Lake under the "American" administration Is simply one huge graft, and the sooner It Is removed from the control the better It will be for the city. The legislature passed a joint p'ho'hi-1 tlon opposing the reciprocity treaty j with Canada. This we think was a mistake. It was In opposition to President Taft's cherished desire and against the Interest of the consumer. Canada Is not a producer of pausr labor goods, and whatever Increase there would be In Imports from Canada Can-ada would mean so much more exported ex-ported from this country. Of course Senator Smoot was opposed to the treaty, but it ought not to be necessary neces-sary for tho legislature to take its cue from the senator. Kallanger has resigned and the people peo-ple will feel that there is less danger now of the resources of the country being turned over to corporations and individuals for their enrichment. Hal langer was always ready to strain the law to make It favor corporations,-but corporations,-but was unwilling to protect public Interests unless there was the dearest support of precedent and practice. In spile of President's Taft'a eulogy on the retiring secretary, we think ninety per cent of the cople have pronounced pro-nounced their verdict against him. While Plnchot Mllcy may have worked sottio hardship In Individual cases, we believe the great majority of the American people back It up. If we were not quite sure as to w hich side of a question was right, we would bo quite certain If we found the Tribune against It. We would know then It was the right side. It stands up for Hallanger, It defends Ixirliner, tho bribe giving senator of Illinois; It opposes the Initiative and referendum, tho commission form of government, the popular election of senators. In fact every measuro that proposes to give the privileged class less power, and give the people more power It opposes. op-poses. Put what could be expected when we consider that the owner of the Tribune la an ex senator and a member of the class that Is always looking for special privileges. |
