Show RUNAWAY. On Monday a span of lively horses belonging to a gentleman who resides on the Island, were standing at a post on the lower part of Main Street. Becoming frightened at the barking of a dog, the animals started, and before they could be secured had gained a frightful speed. Several persons on Main street barely escaped injury from the flying steeds and the vehicle to which they were attached. The horses kept on their way unmolested, until they reached the Coop [Co-op]. corner. As they were rounding this, a young man rushed out from the sidewalk; and seizing the bits, brought them to a sudden stand. But little damage was done. The racing of this span of horses disturbed the ?[community, cou?inrcity] of two other ?? which were standing on Second street, ?[and] they made fast tracks toward the depot ?[leaving] their disconsolate owner behind. ?[Nothing] serious was accomplished by them. |
