Show From the End of the Road. EDITOR LEADER-Thinking a few items from this part of the world would be of interest to you and your patrons, I send you the following: We arrived at Melrose, the further terminus of the U.&N.R.R. on the 6th last, having laid the track from a point near Dillon to that place, since April 13, (distance 35 miles.) We remained at Melrose and vicinity twelve days, laying side tracks &c., preparatory to the removal of the terminus to that place from Dillon. We are now three miles north of Melrose on the way to Butte, at which place the terminus is expected to be the coming winter. The U.&.N.R.R. Company have a large force of mechanics putting up Offices, depot &c., at Melrose. The freight forwarding companies are also making extensive preparations for the boom which is expected in a few days, when regular trains commence running. The weather is very changeable lately, generally cool for the season, with heavy showers of rain and hail accompanied by thunder and lighting. Crops are backward, the small grain being about three inches high. Yours respectfully, THOS. [THOMAS] E. RICKS. CONSTRUCTION TRAIN, terminus U.&.N.R.R. Montana, June 21st, 1881. |
