Croft Thomas Jefferson liked to brag as much as the rest of us, but he bragged about his country and its people. As ambassador to France, he joined immediately in combat with Comte Georges de Buffon, the naturalist. Jefferson un- packed a panther skin he had taken with him to prove the animal was larger than his European relatives. Buffon, who had scoffed at the claim, admitted his erroi . But when Jefferson said a European reindeer could actually walk head up under the belly of an American moose, Buffon guffawed. Jefferson, infuriated, wrote to a friend in America, telling him to spare no expense in finding a moose big enough to silence Buffon permanently. American honor was at stake, and his friend, New Hampshire Gov. John Sullivan, received Jeffersons request as a military command. He gathered the best trappers and hunters in his state and sent the little army snowshoeing through the winter woods to find a giant moose. They succeeded, but the animal was so large that 10 men could not extract him from the forest primeval where he had been slain. road Undaunted, Sullivan cut a into the woods to haul the monster out by sleigh. Stuffing, dressing and shipping him to the seacoast was another major operation. When Jefferson received the beast it was community. Horner ED OPIN We not in the best of condition; most of the hair had fallen off. But the real shock was the bill 46 pounds sterling, more than $1,000 in todays money, at a time when Jefferson, who because of his public service had found little time to operate his farm, could scar- cely afford it. He was having trouble meeting his expenses in Paris. But he saw the business through, sending the speciman to Buffon, who wrote that he certainly would revise his theories about North American animals. Unfortunately, Buffon died a few months later before he got around to publishing his apology. The campaign for the presidency in Jeffersons first term was perhaps the dirtiest' in American history. One anti- Jefferson newspaper published a poem, purportedly written by the candidate ex- tolling the joys of nightly trysts with his Negro maidservant. The calumny continued after Jeffersons narrow victory, but he made some converts in the way he knew best through personal contacts. on one of his regular afternoon rides, Jeffersons magnificent steed, Wildair, caught the eye of a Connecticut Yankee who asked the president, without knowing who he was, if he was interested in a horse trade, Soon they were discussing politics, and the man said he had no use for this Mr. Jef- ferson. The president murmured that he thought there was at least a point or two in . his favor. Come, come, said the Yankee. I guess you dont see the moral sin of niggery; but it aint only that. This Thomas Jefferson did you ever see him? Jefferson nodded, Well, thats more luck than Ive had; but that doesnt matter. Now, I hear tell that this Jefferson is a very wasteful chap with d our money. They tell me he never goes out but hes got clothes on his back that would sell for a plantation. Author Thomas Fleming (The Man From Monticello: An Intimate Life of Thomas Jefferson) cites the following experience as an example of the strength of Jeffersons belief in basic freedoms: One day Jefferson received a visit from Baron Alexander von Humboldt, the distinguished German scientist who had come to America to see its great men. As he waited for the President in his study, the baron picked up a Federalist newspaper that was filled with the usual slanders against Jefferson. When he came in the agitated German asked him: Why is not this libelous journal suppressed, or its editor at least fined and imprisoned? Jefferson smiled. Put that paper in your pocket, Baron, and should you hear the reality of our liberty, the freedom of the press, questioned, show this paper, and tell where you found it. Citizens today should learn from the way Jefferson bragged. hard-earne- But this isstrictlyMr. Adkins fault. He comes home and if he has something that is bothering him he soon learns to become active in a minority group. Minority groups are the effective and vocal groups that make political entities that oppose them highly visible as to what judgments they have made. So when a situation such as a disabled veterans home like St. Benedicts Hospital, becomes an issue that could conflict with the present commercial nursing homes in the state, creating more surplus beds in present homes that were mostly subsidized with government grants and funds. Another factor would be the supervision the veterans hospital would have to have with V.A. funds. Involved local politicians dont cotten to outside supervision. After world war II if a man had political ambitions he would seek every opportunity to address veterans organizations and express themselves to large interested gatherings. They still do in other states, but in Utah they figure with their Freeman groups and other organized machinery they dont need to. A good example of what l am trying to express was the passing of the St. Benedicts Hospital for disabled veterans home by the Utah Legislative bodies and the bill was approved by Governor Matheson. -After all this had been accomplished the leaders of the state governing bodies who had written the bill, that had been approved by the governor in good faith, specifically house speaker James Hansen presently aspiring to U.S. congress and president Miles (CAP) Ferry took the Bill they had written to the states attorney, whose name has a distinguished recognition factor. Hansen agreed that the bill as it had been ramroded through for approval was illegally composed. Both Hansens have again determined they will be acceptable to the voting population veterans included. Now I realize that the veterans organizations have to be careful in any public action as an organization and many leaders in veterans organizations are themselves playing a little politics. But the organizations could encourage their members to at least read the newspapers and find out the details that show what is behind the brief exposure they see on the boob tube and do some thinking for themselves. At least the value of the people they vote into Congress. Arthur N. Howell 455 Ann St. Clearfield, Utah ELECT 4 YEAR DAVIS COUNTY i. COMMISSIONER 9.
