Show 8FB 1981 26, Aug. Darts Have Skill, But Can't Afford Single Injury By PHIL KIRKWOOD Sports Editor August 17, when Since prep football teams across the state opened for official practice, Davis High Coach Ward Sawley has been crossing his fingers each time he hears the pads pop. You see, although his Darts have talent and speed they lack depth and that has Sawley worried about injuries to key players. Weve got to be smart and play with caution so we wont lose anyone to injury before the league season starts, said Sawley. Were not very big and we have a tough n schedule to contend with. Speaking of size, Sawley says this years team is the smallest hes coached in some time. He says theyre quick at the skill positions but that most every starter will be playing both defense and offense which could spell disaster if two or three should be injured before league play. Still, Sawley feels confident that this years team will win its share of games and he expects them to put a lot of points on the board in the process. We didnt have a great deal of depth last season and that gave some players on this years team a said Sawley. lot of experience, We lost some size, but we gained some speed overall. Our defensive backs might have some problems at first because theyre young, but theyll be more than ready by league play. In league play, Sawley says his team will have their work cut out for them since Davis has been but that theyre bumped up to looking forward to the challenge. Weve got some good teams in the league with the change in regions this year, said Sawley. Highland and Bountiful will be tough and East is good in any league. Both Viewmont and Woods Cross have new head coaches who I know personally and their programs, should really take off. I think we can beat any of them and were looking forward to it. Heres what Coach Sawley has to say about some of his starting players: BEN HORN QUARTERBACK Ben is a good roll out passer because hes got some speed.
