And Layton recreation supervisor Sam Dato has just that in Mark Thompson. Mark spends most of his time behind the scene and as a result, his efforts go largely unnoticed. But as program coordinator, Marks contribution to the program is more than valuable, its essential. Without him, tournament draw sheets might resemble Chinese fire drill instructions, team standings would never reach the paper, winning teams would be without trophies, equipment would never be repaired and Sam Dato would most likely never see sunlight. Since joining the recreation staff four years ago, Mark has blended well with its philosophies and stands in total agreement. Our goal is to offer as many activities to the public as we can at the lowest possible cost, says Thompson. In h top-notc- all-sta- rs one-ma- one gets a chance to play. Mark received his training for the job at Utah State University where he played football and wrestled from 1965 to 1967. He also played some football in the army while on tour in Germany and Viet Nam. Army football was on a par with good junior college ball, recalls Thompson. But that was on the average because up you never knew who you werewent against. Most of the players never for- beyond high school, but some were mer pros and the rest had college ball experience. The game got pretty dirty sometimes. With football being Marks first love, part of his job naturally includes running the Wasatch Front Football League (WFFL) in Layton city. With the new fffienD Never Memtfbinied Phil COACH SELECTION Kirkwood Coaching is probably most important. You cant have a coach that treats his team too hard especially at their age. The coach has to be knowledgeable and he cant put winning as the major goal, but rather make sure each boy plays. Most of all he has to understand young boys in general as to their wants and needs. Selecting coaches is pretty hard sometimes, he said. Thompson also points out that because Davis County dropped junior high football from the school budget, WFFL has become the major fielding ground for the high school programs. Our job in the WFFL is to give each boy a solid fundamental background in football to prepare them for high school ball if he wants to play it. High school ball is a lot season set to begin workouts Aug. 1, Mark is already scheduling meetings for player placement, officials, coaching selection and equipment costs. Recreation is one profession that you cant afford to procrastinate, says Thompson with a chuckle. If you put things off for more than a day, youll get behind and then youre really in trouble. I look forward to the football season though. Mark says youth football should be viewed from an individual standpoint as to its value for youngsters. 1 Never Mind Wrms nd Eggs, Weber Angler Prefers the Fly By BLISS FULLMER Staff Writar There is a rare breed of fisherman, who wouldnt be caught dead using worms or cheese, or even artificial trolling lures, to do his fishing. He is known as a fly fisherman, and he is proud of the label. Such a man is Dave Scadden of South Weber. Im not snobbish, said Dave, but anyone can string a worm, or mold cheese onto a hook. It takes real determination and skill to be able to tie a fly, and with it, catch a fish. The fish are better, too, he continued, because more of the native fish go for natural food, rather than rabbit Pellets and dog food. Fly fishermen seem to enjoy the sport better, added Dave. They spend many a winters night, tieing flies and preparing for the season. Dave combines business with pleasure. He works at a sporting goods store in Riverdale, which caters to fishermen, and he teaches , classes at the store for those who wish to learn the art of fly tieing and fly rodding. For $25 a student comes in for four, three hour sessions of individual instruction. We limit our classes to ten or fifteen students; we furnish all materials, and the students get to keep everything he ties, said Dave. Dave also ties and sells flies at the store, and he finds time to try out any and all new d mincreations. His favorite is a big now fly, and word got around of the success he had on it. Now he cant keep the store in stock. Dave Scadden does a lot of fishing on the Madison River in Montana. In Utah, he prefers the Upper Weber, The South Fork of the Weber and Black Smith. He uses a barbless hook, because he releases most of what he catches. I dont keep anything under eight or nine pounds, said Dave, but I do keep most of the planted fish that take my flies. They run off the native fish. The planters seldom adapt, and they last less than a year, he said. bull-hea- CtKSENT 1,500-3,00- 0 400-80- Meters. Mi::iua INVEST- YIELD Dave delights in catching fish and letting them go to catch them again. He keeps a pair of serrated scissors in his bag, and notches many of the fish he catches. Its interesting to catch a fish, year after year, said Dave, and to note how many inches and how much weight they put on in a years time. Dave had some sound advice for the novice fisherman, who might want to indulge in fly fishing. Fish always face upstream into the current, he began, so I always fish upstream, and cast my fly and let it come into them. I always look for trout that are rising, and I cast to them first. If the fish arent rising, I cast behind the rocks, and into the eddies, (the smooth slick water beind the rock) I go for bends in the river and cast to the edge of the far banks, under the willows, etc. Having the proper fly at the proper time is a problem faced by every fisherman, but Dave Scadden has a solution. He take his vice and equipment in his creel. In terms of the program as a whole, Mark credits Sam Dato as the major influence behind the growing success. Mark claims he has spoken with people who moved to Layton City solely for the recreation activities offered there. One aspect of the program Mark would like to see take some growth would be the addition of qualified part-tim- e instructors to help out in the busy months between April and August. Id like to see a specialized format, explained Thompson. Such as a high school football coach running the WFFL. It would make for a more professional For sure, its an individual thing. Some kids are ready to play at that age and some arent. You have to make sure each boy gets in the league that best suits his weight, age and ability. 525 Steft Ststa, CfesrffeU, ft. ig v.yf |
