Show WEEKLY REFLEX DAVIS NEWS JOURNAL, NORTH DAVIS LEADER, MAY 20, 1982 Brain Summertime Is Regulates Apple Pie And Body Fat Little Leaguers Setpoint Keith Duncan Bulletin Sports With the soccer balls and nets stored away for a few months, kids by the dozens have flocked to the local baseball diamonds to try their hand at little league baseball. Its been said that baseball is to America like apple pie and Chevrolets. But to these youth the sport is the very best thing to do. By DR. DALE NELSON Professor, USU So you want to lose weight? At some point, most Americans give it a try with little long-ter- success. 4 Little league baseball in Clearfield played their first games of the season last Monday evening. Games like this will thake them all the way into August for most age groups. ACCORDING TO one of the newer concepts, your body seems to have a setpoint for body fat; a level of fatness your body strives to maintain. It is the weight you tend to stay at when you arent trying to control calories. In theory, the cells that store fat apparently release chemical signals telling the brain how much fat they contain and, when necessary, asking for more. Dieting does nothing to change the setpoint; it is a form of rebellion against the sys- One young team that hopes to make it a long old team sponsored way is the 1, 11 and by A and J Floor of Clearfield. IN AN even more sneaky way, the brain seems to orchestrate hormonal changes that lower your metabolic rate so you burn calories more slowly and stop losing weight. Does the shoe fit your case? This theory is farily well documented, so don't ignore it entirely. All is not hopeless! There are ways to lower your The most healthful way is exercise. Certain drugs also seem to be effective, but they are not advisable, as far as I am set-poi- concerned. ULTRA-LOcalorie diet plans are programmed for failure; sometimes result in death. The point constantly lost in the multitude of drastic diets is that no starvation or Elected to head up 9th grade activities school year at North Lay-to- n for 1982-8- 3 Junior High School are Matt Peach, lent, vice prsident; Brian Mendoza, president and Robert Lochner, NLJH 9TH GRADE OFFICERS diet can be balanced. The first requirement of a balanced diet is to provide as many calories a day as the body uses a calorie balance. You can unbalance the diet a small amount to include a safe low weight loss, but if the unbalance is too great, it is hazardous to your health. unbaNO SEVERELY lanced diet is entirely safe, even if sufficient nutrients are supplied along with a sharp re duction in calories. For instance, Cambridge plan (330 calories a day) is an unsafe route to take. It becomes increasingly obvious to me that the best answer is a lifestyle of exercise to lower the "setpoint so life can not only be healthful from the exercise spinoff benefits, but tolerable in the process. This plan has worked many years for me and I have watched it work for thousands of others. THE RULE for safe weight loss remains a good diet providing adequate nutrients and a little less calories than your body needs on a daily The A and J squad is cached by Howard Vasser of Clearfield, asisted by Kathy Ledford and Walt Burris. This is the third year Coach Vasser has participated in Clearfield in little league. I dont have a kid of my own playing right now, but I love to work with kids, Vasser said after a team practice. I do have a boy that will start this year and perhaps someday Ill be able to coach him. William Burris of A and J holds hat like a major leaguer, but quickly learned that the game isn't T-b- easy. Vasser felt that parents were losing out unless they become more active with their children in athletics. Tve been around for a while and I still cant understand why more parents wont come out and support their kids in practice and in the games. Finally, the key to both diet and exercise is variety. It helps ensure balanced nutrition and makes exercise tolerable and enjoyable. Gook luck! Although he is a specialist in Mike Dennisons It seems too often in life we hear that nice guys always finish second. This seems especially true in the world of sports. But for a brief moment last week at Weber State the good guys, or the nice ones, took the top honors. It was a great feeling to share in the success of some of the track athletes from the area. Not only are these people top quality on the field of competition but they are also all nice people in every sense of the word. There isnt a better person in the world than Alan Parker of Viewmont. If ever a high school athlete could separate himself from the rest as far as talent goes then Alan would be the one. This guy has done something no other Utah high school athlete has ever done in winning three state titles, with records as well, in the three long distance races. The Greek Gods must be smiling down on this guy. Yet Alan remains just plain old Alan. Never boastful of his accomplishments. Always handing out compliments to his competition, who he maintains is the reason for his success this year. all Sometimes a reporter can see right that some of the athletes act humble this through come up with. But Alan Parker is as genuine as in is apple pie and hot dogs. The guy act an have every sense of the word. He doesnt to put on hes just plain and simple Alan Parker. You have to wonder what he eats for breakfast to make him so fast, yet so shy. Then comes the second member of our nice club. TT hen the final member of our elite club would have to be Eric Nelson of Bountiful. Heres a guy who excells in a sport, track, that no one really pays attention to. Above that, he excells in an event that no one pays attention to, the pole vault. Usually these guys are still vaulting after the meet is over. Few cheers come their way but Eric isnt in the sport for cheers. If ever an underdog came out on top it was Eriq. For three years he has vaulted and not a word said about it. Even this reporter and paper have neglected this fine individual. He usually finished near the top but seldom on top. At last someone decided to reward this hard working senior with a new school record and first place at the region meet. That same person continued this past week by winning the state title. In his own quiet way, Eric has made a big noise in the track and field program at Bountiful. Amidst all the star quality seniors the school has, a dedicated athlete named Eric Nelson may just be the best of all of them. The world will go on, and nice guys will probably finish second for the most part, but for one brief moment last week at the state track meet, three of the nicest guys youll ever meet didnt place second. They won. Same could be said of nice girls. Carolyn Smith is a hard working individual who didnt seek fame and fortune but through her dedication she achieved it. Let these four be a lesson to all of us. With hard work and dedication even the nice folks can win. summer teisMon Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays a.m. Saturdays 0 60 N.
