Extensive Preparations Being Made For Sunday's Great Celebration, Marking an Interesting Epoch in the History His-tory and Progress of the Catholic Church in Utah. - j As has been previously announced, j the laying of the corner stone of the Cathedral of St. Mary Maedalen w ill take place next Sundav evening. Ceremonies Cere-monies commence at 5:30 p. ni. All members of the congregation are expected to be present. The committee on arrangements will srid spec ial invitations invi-tations to the press, public officials and non-Catholic friend;-?: and should any members of the congi egation have friends whom they would like to have present, the names should be sent to William P. O'Meara, sec retary, and an invitation will be forwarded to them. Seats will be reserved for the specially invited guests. The members of the congregation will delegate themselves each a committee of one to see that invited guests receive courtous ' attention. On Friday evening a public reception will be given Most Reverend Archbishop Arch-bishop Riordan at Bishop Scanlan's residence from 8 to JO o'clock. All members mem-bers of the congregation are earnestly requested to he present to pay their respects re-spects to his Grace. Also please bring your non-Catholic friends. It is m:' desire that this reception and the laying of the corner stone be made two of the greatest events in the history of the Cathobc Church in this diocese: so do not allow any other engagements en-gagements to interfere with your being be-ing present on these two occasions. The .railroads-running into the city have kind-lvViiublijshed a rate of one fare to Salt Lake City and return from all points-on their lines for those wishing wish-ing to come t the city on the day of the. laying of the corner stone. Archbishop Riordon will deliver the address at the laying of the corner stone on Sunday. fe stands today among the first pulpit orators in the American Church. The Archbishop is on his way home from Rome where he visited Pope Leo Xill and will be given a public reception recep-tion on reaching San Francisco. He is the Metropolitan of the ecclesiastical province of which Salt Lake is a part. Archbishop Riordon, was born Aug. -'7. LS41, at Chatham. Xew Brunswick. In the year 1S4-S his parents resolved to go west and found a new home in Chicago. Chi-cago. Young Riordan became a pupil at the University of St. Mary of the Lake. In the year IS.'.H he went to Notre Dame. Ind.. where he remained for two years. In ls:,S he was sent to Rome to attend the College r.f the Propaganda. After the opening of the American college there, he entered as one of the first twieve students of this celebrated institution, but the climate in the Eternal City did not agree with his constitution. He therefore there-fore left for Paris, where he studied at the College of the Holy Ghost and completed his studies at the American College at Louvain. where he was made a doctor of theology. He was ordained June 10. UsH.",, at Mechlin, ' Belgium, by Cardinal E. Stercks. June 2.", 1S71, he was assigned as pastor of ' St. James church, Chicago, and remained re-mained in charge until 1-SS3, when he i was made coadjutor to the Archbishop j of San Francisco. He was concerated at Chicago, Sept. 16, 1SS3, by Archbishop Arch-bishop Feehan, assisted by Bishop Mc-Clusky, of Louisville, and Bishop Chatard of Vincennes, as titled Bishop of Cabesa (I. P. I.) and coadjutor to San Francisco. He succeeded to the see of San Francisco as Archbishop Dec. 28, 18S4. and the Pallium con-1 con-1 ferred on him Sept. 20. 18S3. |
