Luke, president of the Merchants' Protective Association, Associa-tion, refused to pay an assessment on what the government claimed to be the net profits of .the company, in accordance ac-cordance with a law passed last year, causing all corporations to pay a percentage per-centage of their net profits in excess of $5,000. as an assessment, the internal inter-nal revenue officials levied against certain cer-tain office property in Mr. Luke's office, of-fice, and Monday a man and a dray appeared at the office to take away the property. Mr. I.uke protested against the property prop-erty being taken, which included a golden oak desk, a mahogany filing case, a planotype machine and a car- pet, but to no avail, and the man immediately im-mediately set to work to take up th carpet. In the meantime Luke went to see Internal Revenue Collector K. H. Callister, who appointed him keeper- , , of the property which had been levied' , on until November 3, until which time' ' he was given to file an amended statement state-ment of the profits of the corporation. The internal revenue department figured that the profits of Luke's company com-pany from this statement amounted to about $25,000 a year. Mr. Luke refused to pay an assessment on this amount, :' contending that it was not the profits of the corporation. tut his personal profits.
