Show new N ew high grade melon developed watermelons have long 0 been a ma lor jor crop in green river local mel ons are widley known for their very fine quality and flavor last year the agriculture cesear ch service at charleston south car olma olina announced that they had de a new nc w superior type of melon for shipping to distant markets the new variety called charleston grey was said to be a high quality wilt resistant melon with a tough rind to reduce breakage losses in shipp ing this information attracted the interest of the green river soil con S er district supervisors they decided that such a melon might be good in green river TWO pounds of seed were burch ase ased d by the district this spring and was distributed to various melon gro aers in the valley for a trial the melons grew successfully here as the above 41 pound sample shows mel on growers testing the new s seed eed in eluded boyd hunt alien allen perkins joe alien allen and delbert tidwell they found the new variety to be good but not as good as they had hoped the plants were wilt resistant but seemed to require more care to dev elop a marketable melon the fruit seemed to ripen a few days earlier than the old standby varieties most of the ripe melons weighed over 20 pounds the district still has about a po und of the ong ional seed left which they intend to use se next year farm ers wishing to try this new melon can obtain some seed from kenneth silliman secretary of the S C D board the introduction of this new melon variety was another effort by the lo 10 cal soil conservation leaders to br ing about an improved agriculture in the green river valley ken williams local soil conserva tion zionist wears a smile as he meas ures a 41 pound charleston grey watermelon taken from the joseph alien allen farm at elgin utah jha |
