Show Tolitical Vietv Taint. The Kearns people have gone into cover quite notably since the exposure of the scheme of the senior senator's faction to launch Mr. Odell as the convention nominee and then control the city patronage through Mr. John Henry Smith, the Grateful. They were also somewhat alarmed by the statement in these columns that the Heavenly Heaven-ly Twins would look with serenity upon Mr. Odell's nomination in the expectation of handling the implement manager through President Joseph Jo-seph F. Smith. They have also been conducting a wily campaign cam-paign with the Independent Republicans who believe be-lieve that the election of Odell would mean an ad-minstration ad-minstration partially in behalf of the Home Telephone Tele-phone company and more specifically in the interest in-terest of the president (Mr. Smith) of the company com-pany of which Mr. Odell is manager. They are around extensively with the insidious whisper that whatever candidate is supported by the adherents of Sutherland will at the same time be the candidate can-didate of the church, and in this way they have expected to produce a pro-Kearns sentiment. But it is difficult to see how a political coterie who are advocating a man so close to the Mormon hierarchy as Odell can successfully disseminate the belief that they are representative of the anti-Mormon anti-Mormon element. This palpable inconsistency, whereby they hoped to ally the anti-Mormon independents against anyone not favorable to Kearns, has lead to their recent incipient launch of a boom in favor fa-vor of John J. Daly for the mayoralty. While Mr. Daly has not encouraged the idea, it has made it apparent that the Kearns program is to fawn upon Odell as a mayoralty posibility, but at the same time to incidentally push some man, not a Mormon, to give the impression that they are running run-ning a campaign on a strictly anti-Mormon basis, the sequence to be that if they feel strong enough to do so they will sidetrack Odell and center on the subsidiary candidate they really want. If that appears too hazardous, however, they will support Odell with the hope of controlling him through John Henry Smith, the Grateful. Still they are less satisfied with the implement manager's man-ager's candidacy since the announcement that the Heavenly Twins, Callister and Anderson, were not adverse to Odell, as they would expect to handle the reins in case of hi.s election through the unequivocal influence of President Joseph F. Smith. That state of affairs ha? caused the Kearns henchmen to beam bewitchingly upon the Heavenly Twins, and it is known that within with-in the past two weeks negotiations have been going on between a prominent Kearns lieutenant in one of the city departments and Callister and Anderson, with a view to having Kearns and the Twins support the same candidate and later divide the patronage between the two factions. But while the honorable senior senator and his valliant knights are courting the favor of the church by seeking an alliance with the Heavenly Twins, they are vastly industrious in circulating the information thatin supporting a candidate not antagonistic to Sutherland an elector would in reality be allying himself with the Mormon ranks, as the ex-congressman is not fighting Smoot. Naturally Nat-urally enough, that, since Smoot is not an issue in the municipal campaign. But to the casual observer ob-server it seems improbable that Mr. Sutherland would support a man for mayor who might be used later by the high church officials to encompass encom-pass his defeat and boost Kearns agriln into a senatorial sen-atorial seat & & & In casting about for candidates for mayor the name of Hon W. F. James has received honorable honor-able mention. Many citizens would be glad were the mention of his name to crystalize into a nom ination. Mr. James is as straight and true a man as ever walked these streets. He has been here since Salt Lake was a village, he knows the city's needs, in time past he has devoted much unpaid-for unpaid-for time in investigating the- water problem of the city and he would assumo the office of mayor, not only with a determination to serve the city faithfully, but with the needed knowledge to unite intelligent with practical work in its behalf. & Candidates for the councilmanic nominations are being spoken of extensively in the different precincts. In the First, the men most prominently prominent-ly referred to in this connection are F. J. Hewlett, Hew-lett, Wright Pickering, Thomas Hobday, Ernest Spiers, J. J. Thomas, Arthur Robinson, B. S. Harrington Har-rington and J. J. Corum, and the fight promises to be one of unusual interest. Down in the Second, the chief contestants will be George D. Dean, B. J. Eardley, Sylvester Q. Cannon, B. F. Redman, R. D. Blackmar and W. E. Vigus. In the Third there is not so large an array. The men in the lead at present appear to be T. A. Callister, Cal-lister, Arthur Parsons, Frank S. TIngey and B. F. Grant. The Fourth also is not overburdened with candidates. can-didates. The few most prominqntly mentioned are Jack Sharp, T. E. Harper and Dr. W. F. Beers. A strong effort is also being made to have James Chipman enter the race. The present incumbents from the Fifth, T. R. Black, A. J. Davis and J. S. Daveler will aspire to re-election. They wiir be. opposed by C. M. Neu-hausen, Neu-hausen, Joseph Cottle and W. L. Pickard. & & & The young men in the Republican ranks are again showing signs of activity, and last night held a meeting for the purpose of effecting a thorough organization of the-1 Young Men's Republican Repub-lican club in preparation for active campaign work. Their plan is to form no alliances but to work Independently as they have heretofore during dur-ing many hard fought campaigns. |
