Show ? UhteiJtng Methods of the Trtbtine. H 'Wholesale blunder of Special "Dispatches B Some time Ego the thievery of the Telegram In B lifting editorials from Eastern papers and ex B plotting them as original matter was exposed in B these columns. Since then the Tribune and the B piaindealer, the other two leading journals of the B state, have resorted to similar tactics, and the B habit of journalistic buccaneering appears now to B be assuming the proportions of an epidemic. B For several weeks readers of the Tribune B have been astounded at the numbers of "Specials B to the Tribune," which have decorated the pages ft of that immaculate daily. Fear was expressed that B the special writers from all over the world were B working over time, and that some humane soft so-ft ciety should be called upon to alleviate the suf-B suf-B ferings of overworked correspondents. ft But it appears that all this anxiety and men-Si men-Si tal strain on the part of the dear public was mis-B mis-B placed, as the only man who was working over ft time was the paste pot and scissors editor, whom ft the Tribune had employed to mulct stories from B Eastern papers and launch them as Tribune ca-B ca-B blegrams. ft This Is a system of newspaper robbery which B would cause a blush to bemantle the sodden' B cheek of a becutlassed buccaneer. It is some- B times resorted to by papers of reasonable stand- H ing, but when it is done In such a bold, unblush- B Ins and daring manner as the Tribune's style, B it is time the public was advised of the shame- ft less audacity of the deception. fc ft Last Saturday the Tribune published, as a "Special to the Tribune," a story announcing how music may be brought to Salt Lake over the wires. It was displayed under a slug head on the first column of the first page of that beatific bea-tific journal. The amazement of the public over the Tribune's enterprise might have gone seriously seri-ously askew had they known that the story had appeared In toto In the Philadelphia North American Amer-ican a few days before, with the single exception . of the insertion of "Salt Lake" in lieu of the Quaker City. If the Tribune cares to dispute this, the files of the North American are available for inspection. The task of exposing this piracy is not agreeable, agree-able, but the time for an expose of this wanton deception of the public and a despicable descent into the substratum of contemptible journalism seems opportune, particularly since old-time subscribers sub-scribers of the paper have openly expressed their denunciation of this limitless and wholesale plundering. plun-dering. Below is a parallel showing the nature of the Tribune's depredations. It will be observed that an article appearing here on March 31st as a "Special to the Tribune," was originally a "Special "Spe-cial dispatch to the North American" of March 27th. The theft, which is merely one of many, is so flagrant that the audacity of it Is almost appalling. ap-palling. And in this connection, it may be stated here that this paper will continue to expose the Tribune's methods as long as this disgraceful piracy continues. |
