Show Area Obituaries i i Bud J. Gates 1921-2004 SALT LAKE CITY, Utah -Bud J. Gates, a loving husband, father, grandfather and greatgrandfather, great-grandfather, passed away at his home on Aug. 31, 2004 after a courageous battle with cancer. Bud was born Mar. 16, 1921 in Escalante, Garfield County, Utah to Hyrum Heaps Gates and Emily (Emma) Elizabeth Woodhead Gates. He married the love of his life, Joy Bailey Gates on Nov. 10, 1945 in Mesa, Ariz. Their marriage was later solemnized in the Salt Lake LDS Temple on Oct. 20, 1970. They have been together in everything for over 59 years. After graduating from Escalante High School, Bud served in the Civilian Conservation Corp (CCC) at Zion National Park, aiding in the construction of "the big tunnel." tun-nel." Bud was an Army Veteran of World War II, serving as a medic in the Service Command Unit 1902. A proud member of the International Association of Bridge, Structural and Ornamental Iron Workers Local Union 27, Bud worked as a journeyman jour-neyman iron worker on local landmarks including the LDS Church Office Building, Beneficial Life Building, Intermountain Power Plant (IPP), and the Brigham Young University stadium. Bud was dedicated in every aspect of his life. As a member of the LDS Church, he was a faithful home teacher and served as both a basketball and Softball coach. His love for sports was evident when he energetically watched every Jazz game. He was devoted to his family, :' t ' ' -i . i Bud Gates never missing a special event, football game or wrestling match to show his support. Bud was an avid hunter and fisherman, fisher-man, enjoying time with his son and grandsons on the Boulder Mountain and telling stories of his days, in Escalante gathering livestock. Bud is preceded in death by his parents and brother Charles DeVere (Jim) Gates. Bud is survived by his wife, brother Cummings Hyrum Gates, son Harvey Dean Gates (Diana) of Holden, Utah; grandsons grand-sons Michael Dean Gates (LaRay) of Riverton, Utah; Shawn Bud Gates (Merrianne) of Cedar City, Utah; Jeffrey Don Gates of Holden; and five greatgrandchildren: great-grandchildren: Kylee, Allyssa, Rachel, Jake and John. Funeral services were held on Saturday, Sept. 4, 2004 at noon at the Haven Ward Chapel in South Salt Lake City. Interment took place at the Holden Cemetery under the direction of Rasmussen Mortuary of ; Mt. Pleasant, Utah. ; '. ; J. Garth Heap HATCH, Utah - James Garth Heap, age 88, died Tuesday, Aug. 31, 2004 in Panguitch, Utah. He was born Dec. 25, 1915 in Spry, Utah to Rowena Perkins and James LeRoy Heap. He married his sweetheart Theora Bamhurst on Mar. 5, 1935 in the St. George LDS Temple. She died January 17, 1990. Garth loved his lifelong occupation occu-pation of cattle ranching. He had also worked for UDOT for 18 years and drove a school bus for Garfield County School District. In his youth, he excelled in basketball bas-ketball in high school and also enjoyed track and baseball. As an active member of the LDS Church, he served faithfully in the bishopric, elder,s quorum and high priests group. He was a kind, gentle husband and father, and an honest hardworking man who was respected and loved by many. Survivors include his sons and their spouses Wallace G. and Marilyn Heap and Donald E. and Deanna Heap both of Hatch; and his son-in-law Kenneth Goulding of Henrieville, Utah; his brother and sister-in-law Elmo and Dorothy Heap of Cedar City, Utah; his sister Charlotte Jordan medicine for public lands. . Although fire is an alarming phenomenon, the bright side is that mule deer and many other wildlife species benefit from the occasional cleansing natural fire provides. ' i r l , ' 1 I ' i I i ' i Garth Heap of Henderson, Nev.; sisters-in-law Evelyn Heap Whatcott of Richfield, Utah and Eloise Heap of Springville, Utah; 17 grandchildren grand-children and 59 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife Theora, daughter Joanne Sawyer Goulding, and brothers Max, Van and Dan Heap. Funeral services .were held Saturday, Sept. 4, 2004 in the Hatch Utah LDS Chapel. Burial was in the Hatch Cemetery under the direction of Mosdell Mortuary of Kanab, Utah. |
