Show Southern Utah Areas Listed as Wilderness the area is extremely dangerous in times of high water. The second new wilderness area is the Beaver Dam Mountain Wilderness Area. The 2,600 acres in Utah are located in Washington County about 8 miles southwest of St. George. Included m this wilderness area is a portion of the rugged Beaver Dam Mountains and the canyon of the Virgin River north of Interstate 15. The main recreational use of the area in the past has been Kayaking in the Virgin River canyon during the spring high water season. The Utah BLM will be working with the Arizona BLM to prepare long range management plans for the new wilderness areas. On August 28, President Reagan signed a bill creating the first wilderness areas on Bureau of Land ; Management administered lands in Utah. I It was also the first wilderness ; designated in Utah since Lone Peak, i administered by the Forest Service. The two new areas are in Kane and Washington counties and are part of larger wilderness areas extending into Arizona. I One of the two areas includes what has been the Paria Canyon Primitive Area since 1969. This area, now designated the Paria Canyon-Vermillion Cliffs Wilderness Wilder-ness Area, contains some 110,000 acres of which 20,000 acres are in I Utah. It is located in Kane County ' about 45 miles east of Kanab on i Highway 89. BLM's Kanab Resource Area in Utah has maintained an j entrance station at the head of the canyon since 1974. ; Over the past few years, visitor use has ranged from 1,300 to 1,600 j people spending almost 8,000 days in f. the canyon. These visitors are drawn to the Utah section for its 42 ; miles of spectacular hiking trails in 5 the main Paria Canyon and the equally beautiful Buckskin Dive. A . number of short day hikes or longer overnight trips are available. People who visit the new ' wilderness area are asked to register with the Kanab Resource Area Office or the ranger at the entrance station.
