Show San Diego-Detroit Matchup Keeps Baseball Fans Happy By John Yardley. The San Diego Padres burst the balloon of the amazing Chicago Cubs Sunday and by so doing locked up a spot opposite the Detroit Tigers in the 1984 World Series. The Pads were led by "old reliable" Steve Garvey who hit a clutch homer in Saturday's game to send San Diego on their way. The ex-Dodger was named the series MVP. The Cubs had stolen the hearts of many fans across the country and looked to be a shoo-in after opening up a two-games-to-no thing lead, but the Padres won three straight at home to spring into the fall classic. In the American League, the talented Detroit Tigers swept in three straight over Kansas City. Kirk Gibson, the former Michigan State ail-American wide receiver was MVP in that series. The World Series opens in San Diego's beautiful Jack Murphy Stadium. In local baseball, Enterprise rocked Piute 13-5 in the Southern Region final played in Cedar City last week. Piute was plagued with numerous errors and mental mistakes. Meanwhile, the young Enterprise team continued their domination of local schools, racking up their tenth straight victory against no defeats. The Wolves play the northern division winner this week at BYU. Our three county baseball teams should all be competitive again next season. Bryce Valley, Escalante and Panguitch all return a number of young players. The Bobcats lose the most seniors, considering at times this year the entire starting team was seniors. Pitching will be the key, as always. The boys athletic teams now await November opening of basketball practice. With the cutback cut-back in games, play will not even begin until after the 10th of December. Girls volleyball continues over the next few weeks. In football, there were a few local upsets, most notably Kanab and Dixie College. The Cowboys went out to a 18-0 halftime lead over visiting San Juan and then lost 19-18. Dixie, rated in the top JC s in the country lost 19-17 to previously 0-4 Snow. It just goes to show nothing is certain in sports. In other football scores, BYU thumped Colorado State 52-9, Utah beat New Mexico 38-14, SUSC lost to Fort Lewis 28-6, Montana bombed Weber State 48-0, and Utah State lost to San Jose State 38-21, and Beaver topped North Sevier 15-7 at their homecoming. Beaver High's Kelly Smith caught two touchdown passes and ran 39 yards for another in the big BYU win. Smith was named the outstanding out-standing offensive player of the game for the Cougars. It is great to see a good local athlete make his mark. |
