Show Forest Service Law Enforcement Plan Under Negotiation Negotiations continue on the annual Forest Service contract with Garfield County for law enforcement en-forcement coverage of campgrounds cam-pgrounds in the county. In September's final Garfield County Commission meteing, Sheriff Vic Middleton presented the new Forest Service proposal to the commission wltich he felt would be too cumbersome for the county's force to handle. As a result he said he was reluctant to sign the document. The commission agreed to support the Sheriff's decision and suggested developing a new contract. con-tract. Distict Ranger Clair Baldwin said the Forest Service is interested in retaining the county's services and negotiations will continue. In other business, Bill Herder, owner of Panguitch Lake General Store, discussed his class A beer license with commissioners which he will upgrade to a class B next year. Herder also asked the commission com-mission for approval of his application ap-plication to Mie state for a State liquor license. Commission Chairman George Middleton signed the cattleguard agreement with the Bureau of Land Management. Previously the county had installed without charge the cattkguards which the BLM supplied. sup-plied. Under the new agreement, the county will charge $250 per installation in-stallation and will provide the usual maintenance. Middlctuu said the county installs three or four new guards each year. He said the cattleguards are mutually beneficial, helping cattle ranchers to eontrol their cattle and helping to meet BLM restrictions regarding cattle on BLM properties. Commissioners instructed county clerk Dawna Barney to place the Escalante Cemetery Maintenance District on November's ballot in response to a letter to the Garfield County Commission signed by the Escalante Town Council. The county's mill levy was dropped from the proposed 9.6 mills to 9.2 mills by the State Tax Commission Com-mission under recent legislation which restricts this year's budget to 106 percent of last year's budget. Commissioner Middleton said that Garfield County still enjoys probably the lowest mill levy in the state. Last year, Garfield County's mill levey was 9.13 miils, so the increase amounts to .07 mills, Middleton said. Kent Wintch, the county's grant supervisor, informed the commission com-mission that the lowest bid for engineering on the proposed new Ticaboo Community Onter was submitted by John RowKiy, Cedar City, at $6,200. The commission approved the courthouse closing on Monday, Oct. 22 for Deer Day with the county employees required to use one day of annual leave. |
