Show Garkane Assists Poor In Power Aid Program On September 24, Garkane Power Association, Inc. established a program called "Project AID" to help the growing number of families who are not eligible for the assistance they need under the federally funded energy assistance program, but who need temporary aid in energy-related emergenices. Garkane's Board of Directors approved ap-proved an initial donation from the association of $2,500 of which $500 was allocated for administrative costs and $2,000 was put into a fund with the American Red Cross to assist these low and fixed income families. The $2,000 "seed money" and all voluntary contributions received from Garkane member-consumers and employees will be matched by $1 from a State Fund approved by the 1984 Utah State Legislature for every $2 donated. Garkane became involved in Project Aid because its initiative is critical to maintain electrical service to families which are in jeopardy. Garkane's directors, employees, and member-consumers have been encouraged to donate to Project AID. Employees participate through payroll deduction, direct contributions and, like Garkane's customers, by adding some extra to their monthly residential billing. The success of the "AID" program would be limited, except for the cooperative efforts of the American Red Cross in administering the program. "AID" contributions go directly to residential customers of Garkane Power in dire financial emergencies. emergen-cies. Recipients are selected according ac-cording to guidelines established by a volunteer advisory board. Eligibility is based on handicaps, medical hardships, or households without income. Assistance from the "AID" program is desigend to be temporary tem-porary aid only. The funds go directly to the supplier of the product or service. |
