Show n Joseph McConkle Is discussing one of the many scriptures taught at the Education Day in Panguitch with Robert J. Matthews. Mr. Matthews speclallted on the subject of Joseph Smith and Mr. McConkle on family unity. 1 BYU Education Day I Draws Large Group I Here on Saturday "There is ample evidence that Joseph Smith wanted to publish the New Translation of the Bible and was working toward getting it ready for printing, but could see the work being delayed because the members of the church did not respond as completely to the Lords council to help financially," Robert J. Matthews chairman of the department of Ancient Sciprutres at the Brigham Young University said at BYU Education Day held in Panguitch At the time of his death, Joseph Smith had completed the translation of the Bible, but because of the lack of money was unable to get it published. Repeatedly the Lord advised "the church members that if they want the blessings of additional knowledge from Joseph Smith, they should provide Joseph and family with food and other temporal necessities." (D&C 43:12-13.) The family Bible which Joseph had used to make the 3,410 inspired changes from the King James version of the Bible was kept by his wife, Emma at the time of his death. After the Reorganized Church was organized with Joseph Smith III as president of the church, the inspired Bible, old and new testament was printed and pat-tented by the Reorganized Church, Matthews said After 15 years of trying to see the manuscript personally and being denied the request, Mr. Matthews was finally permitted to see the family Bible with handwritten manuscript of prophet. He spent the time necessary to completely type the inspired version. After studying his typewritten copy with the printed copy of the Inspired Version he concluded that "The inspired version is very accurately printed." The feeling of the First Presidency as printed in the Church News editorail December 7, 1974, toward this matter is: "When the Book Of Mormon, Doctrine and Covenants, and Pearl of Great Price offer information relative to bibli -al interpretation, these should be given preference In writing and teaching But when these sources of latter-day revelation do not provide significant information which is available in the Inspired Version (of the Bible), then this version may be used." Other subjects covered at the Educational Day taught by both Mr. Matthews and Joseph V McConkie, assistant prol ,mh of ancient scriptures in the College of Religion, were: "Ihe Book of Mormon: a Key to the Future," "Joseph Smith: Husband, Father and Seer," "The Household of Faith," "Living by the Spirit", and "Jesus Christ The Chief Cornerstone " "As often as Hi have been asking, the Lord has Men responding, if we are only listening," McConkie said when speaking of living Dy faith The group was also told that "Fear will ktep you from doing things but love will cause you to do many thing". It causes us to get up and go when we don't have to get up and go." When speaking of redemption the group was told, "True faith in Jesus Christ does not permit an alternate plan We need a redeemer To think we could save ourselves is self righteous." When speaking of the family, Mr. McConkie said, "All positions in the church are temporary except that of the father and mother which is eter nal." He said at one time he was asked how he and his brothers and sisters learned to like reading the scriptures and what did his mother and father do, the reply was, "nothing." If you want to teach a child, show them. Be the type of person you want your children to be, he said. "Family teachings are hollow if not backed up by example." |
