The problem here in Garfield and surrounding counties is greater than whether we want to actively promote the influx and use of OHV'sand ATV's in this area; although, it is part of the larger concern. The real issue is how can we respect, preserve and protect the quality of life that the Mormon values and culture built into our communities and adjacent farms. This culture has been here since the area was settled in the late 1800's and with little change, it still exists today. Due to the slow economic development this area has experienced over the past century and a half, our county has been spared the ravages of modern development. Not until the recent promotion of tourism and public land use that began with the building of the Glen Canyon Dam had we experienced the intrusion of the federal government and outside private interest in our area to the extent present today. A large percentage of the people in our county are descendants of early pioneers who settled this area. Most of the people Who have come in the past few years are people that appreciate, respect and enjoy the culture found here; consequently, the majority of our citizens have the desire to preserve this heritage. With few exceptions, the people of our county do not want to see this area become just another land grab for the rich and famous or a hot tourist destination. Some examples of communities which had a quality of life that have been eroded in the manner that concerns most of us include Crested Butte, Colorado; Bend, Oregon; Sedona, Arizona; Aspen, Colorado and close to home: Moab and St. George, Utah. Not much can be done to save the desirable nature of communities along our interstate highway system. A rural area such as ours, however, can be preserved with a lot of hard work, concern and awareness of the citizens of our AUTO CENTER 215 N. How? First elect officials to our county and city governments who share the philosophy of preserving the culture and values of our area. Secondly, stop seeking tourist promotional dollars for tempting programs offered by private or government agencies. Instead seek funds from agencies to promote and preserve our heritage and for basic infrastructure needs in support of our communities and our citizens' way of life, not the lifestyle of the tourist. Most of the people who live here do not live here for the money, but for the quality of life and hard work this area offers! Let's do all that we can to insure that the rural quality that exists here is preserved and remember, this is our county and our town, not the county and town of every tourist who hands us a buck!! Let's stop bowing down to the money and start standing up for the real value - the values that brought us and our families here in the first place and that holds us here today!!!
