W Smith one of the best known and most highly respected respected re reo re- re women in the church had caused a vacancy in the presidency of or the Relief society Mrs 1 Emeline B. F Smith would not be beable beable beable able to be present owing to recent illness he presided at the opening s session session ses ses- s- s sion sian of or the conference having risen from a sick bed His speaking was an effort however and several times during his talk of twenty minutes his voice broke and he was almost compelled com corn to give way to his weakness After welcoming the Saints and expressing expressing ex ex- ex pressing his gratitude for tor such a large assemblage at the first meeting PresIdent PresIdent President Pres Pres- ident Smith talked on honor and truth He said there was never a time within his life when he had done anything dishonest nor had he ever broken faith he said He declared that he had been true to his God to his church and to his fellow men and that there was nothing in his life which would make him quail when he came before the Almighty on the day of reckoning It was with a voice of challenge that President Smith defended his honor and character against attacks coming he said from froth men within the church It was not a defense of the church position upon any matter nor in general in regard to the policies of ot President Smith There have been some attacks against the president by members of the church it Is understood understood un un- un and these President Smith answered in no uncertain terms In spite of ot his weak condition The rest of the work of the opening session of the conference consisted of addresses by Anthon H.
