Mr. Bromley says a company com-pany representative from "back east" made him a good sale offer on it, and "he took him up on it. " The new owner doesn't know exactly to what use he will put the building, but he says he does intend that the building will be improved in appearance, and soon. It has been vacant, except for short periods, since the 1940 's, when the Duchesne Ward-Duchesne Stake built the new ward-stake center. At present, materials, and equipment are being stored in the building by the contractor of the Duchesne Construction Camp (mobile -trailer homes) -Martindale and Blackctt, Spring ville, Utah; and the wool pool buyer, R. C. Elliott & Sons, Salt Lake City, are storing the big bags of "pooled" wool in the building temporarily. The old building is adjacent to the service station. which Mr. Bromley operates in Duchesne at the intersection of U. S. Highway 40 and Utah Highway 35, in the center of Duchesne City. This building was once the pride and joy of Duchesne. It was the Town Hall. This was shortly after 1905, when the "reservation" was opened for settlement by the "whites" in 1906 Alva Murdock, referred to as "the Father of Duchesene, " instigated the erection of such a building, as he and others who had come to the area recognized recogni-zed the need of such a place for social affairs, religious purposes, dancing, and other uses. It was built as a community project and was used by all organizations or-ganizations in town, and also for school at times. In 1921, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints bought it for $2, 750. 00, so records show. |
