JpJGEQ SERTEMBEIttCONTIMES Layton High cheerleaders busy LAYTON -- When Layton Schools cheerv High leading squad .starts encouraging the football crowd to yell louder so the team will know they have support, the girls are performing drills and routines they have practiced almost daily during most of the summer. They continue to perfect their techniques through assistance from their advisor, Ms. Myrna Mays, and through continuous rehearsals that will last until new cheerleaders are selected at the close of the school year. One way to keep up on the latest cheers and routines is to attend a summer cheerleader camp. This gets squads interacting with each other, exchanging ideas and cheers and offering some competition to determine who does their fun job the best. This summer Layton Highs cheerleaders attended a camp along with about 30 other squads from Western States high schools. After the routines were learned and the ideas exchanged, a competition was held. Layton High tional Finals that will be held Dec. 26 in Orlando, Fla. Four members of the Layton squad received outstanding, individual recognition. Melanie John was named the Outstanding Cheerleader at the camp. She will travel to Hawaii during the Chrismas Holidays to participate in the Aloah Bowl program. Lisa Stettler was the first runner-u- p for the Outstanding Cheerleader. Elane Call and Heather Irwin were given selected as the Outstanding Squad. They qualified for the NCAA Na Diego Charger football game program. dmg Schools Cheerleaders were - ms An alcohol and LAYTON drug abuse unit and a Help line has been instituted at Humana Hospital Davis North in a prevention program geared to the growing addiction of 24-ho- three-pronge- d teenagers and adults. The Humana program is coordinated with Salt Lake Citys Highland Ridge Hospital, an affiliate of American International Health Services, and begins with the concept that alcoholism and drug abuse are treatable illnesses. Citing and self increasing confidence, a recent patient of the Highland Ridge program wrote that he owed his life to the individual treatment. In a comprehensive approach, the program earmarks three phases of treatment at Davis North: Den toxification, Acute and Aftercare-Famil- y Adjustment. According to local treatment center at the hospital. The center will also be linked to a telephone Help line, 24-ho- 774-707- 0. Recent statistics show that almost 20 percent of Utah teens age and 43 percent of Utahs 12-1- 7 use alcohol young adults age on a regular basis. In addition, more than 10 percent of young adults and almost seven percent of 18-2- 5 Treatment-Rehabilitatio- Richard Bell, regional administra- tor of the program, individual treatment will vary according to a patient assessment, but most patients complete the first two phases within one month of hospitalization. The program allows for less time away from job and family and an intensive, accelerated rehabilitation schedule. Family participation is an integral element of the program , he said , noting that alcoholism and drug dependency are family illnesses that affect other family members.
