Thats what Teri Brimhall, zoo docent teavher, did recently. She showed off some of the animals to 4th grade students at East Layton Elementary. Here, shes showing off Ike, the hedge hog, to I.e Ann Eastep, left, Jason Cottrell and Joseph Olson. "ZOO" VISITS a By DONETA GATHERUM docent teacher should call the zoo office. LAYTON - This is not a story about students visiting the Hogle Zoo. This is a feature about Hogle Zoo animals coming out to see students in school. -- THE VISIT of zoo animals is often used to introduce special science units or units about pets and animal care. The zoo prepares a sheet explaining what concepts will be taught and what vocabulary words will be used. For example, the first and second grade programs talk about What are Anim- LAST THURSDAY, four volun- teers from Hogle Zoo in Salt Lake City traveled to the East Layton Elementary School with animals, reptiles and birds. Each docent or unpaid teacher took an animal, a reptiles and a bird into the 4th, 5th and 6th grade classes and gave a 45 minute lesson about animals, their care, needs, classification and adaptation abilities. Students had the opportunity to see and touch animals, reptiles and birds that are normally viewed only through enclosed glass or barred cages. THE HOGLE Zoo is the only one that takes animals out into schools. The program has been in existance for about three years. It is so popular the schools must sign up nearly six months in in the nation als? What are the five groups of animals with backbones? and Why do wild animals make bad pets? Students learn the meaning of words like animal, food, plant, shelter. Older students learn about the animal classification systems. They study amphibians, vertebrates, invertebrates and mam- mals. ANIMAL adaptation is taught in the 5th and 6th grades. In a child's hand, the hedgehog becomes a living creature with facial features and expressions, feet, claws and strange quill-lik- e cover. He pulls his head in to hide and he goes to sleep when he feels secure. THE NEXT meeting will be Oct. of Barbara Iverson 24 at the home in Kaysville. Most children are anxious to handle a boa or an iguanna. Birds are found as pets in many homes but the varieties brought out by the animobile are exciting to young people. Mrs. Brimhall says a child has never been injured by a zoo animal. There has never been an escape. The animals are used every other day and they become used to the teaching routine. In fact, some learn to enjoy attending school, dmg Membership doubles es LAYTON The Layton High School Parent Teachers Student Association (PTSA) recently doubled their membership with a most successful membership drive that offered as incentives 20 prizes donated by local merchants and free tickets to the Layton High Homecoming football game. ACCORDING to Dorothy Paine, PTSA President, the parent response to PTSA is not any greater than student support of the organization. About 60 Layton High students have joined PTSA. Plans are now being made to establish a student council that will mirror the parent council. PTSA will give three $500 scholarships this year to deserving students who belong to the PTSA. Students will have to submit an application to Mrs. Paine in order to be considered for the scholarship. Money for scholarships d was raised through a recent high school stomp, dmg ANIMAL handlers and docent teachers are all volunteers from Hogle Zoo. They have completed a 10 week training course and commit themselves to spending 100 hours each year in the docent teaching program that goes to public schools and in the Hogle Zoo summer educational program. Teir Brimhall, a Docent volunteer for about a year says the program is most satisfying. Somehow doing volunteer teaching like this is more rewarding than holding down a job and receiving pay for your work. Mrs. Brimhall says there is always a need for zoo volunteers and anyone interested in becoming WJ33B OUirKn..
