Show SEPTEMBER 16, 1986 Davis County School District Football Schedule football One war begins Region KEITH By DUNCAN Friday night marks the opening of Region One battles in prep football, with some very interesting match-up- s in store. Roy ) will travel to Clearfield to take on a Falcon team fresth off a 10-- 9 upset victory over the Davis Darts. It was the Clearfield defense that made the difference in that big win for the Falcons. But another big region game features the defending state champion, Weber Warriors, traveling to Laton for a 7:30 p.m. game. may have one of the Layton (3-finest teams theyve had in years, is still trying to while Weber put the pieces together for another season of back to back successes. (2-1- (2-1- ) (1-- WEBER AT LAYTON What were going to face now, is going to be a blood bath, said Laytons Joe Wood in reference to with Weber his teams match-u- p and the rest of Region One in coming weeks. Weber, by virtue of their big win over Logan, has probably established some offensive confidence. Defensively they beat what I considered a very well coached Logan team. And they beat them on the road. There is no question in my mind, that (Rod) Bockwoldt will have his troops cranked to the max, because they know dang well that if they win that game, they could be heading to the playoffs again. "Their game with us, could be the total season for them. But on the other hand, our kids know how important the first league game is for us as well. In terms of last year, had we beat We ber in the opener, we may have gone on and made the playoffs. It would have given us much more field do it again? The Falcons enjoyed one of their most enjoyable wins in the school's football history last Friday night in holding Davis High to just nine points. Now they must turn their attention to Roy and face a team that has played superior defense at times n and rose to through the the occasion on offense as well. We came right back Saturday morning to begin preparations for Roy, said Brent Hancock, "Even though the win over Davis was a big boost, it wont win us any league games, and they are what count. The Falcon offense still has a ways to go but junior quarterback Tim Gardner showed signs of sure maturity last Friday night. There are several other juniors who start along with seniors on the offense and the win over Davis wont hurt their confidence. But on defense, there just arent too many question marks. The confidence. Of course we already have confidence right now with three preseason wins, but those victories dont even compare with what its like in league. After Weber, whether we win or lose, it doesnt get any easier in this league. Clearfield, Bonneville, Roy and Box Elder all have quality programs this fall, said Wood. Only Weber failed to post a winning record of all the region teams but the Warduring the riors practice games were not easy pre-seaso- n, games either. Bonneville and Layton were the only teams to undefeated in go pre-seaso- n. ROY AT CLEARFIELD CLEARFIELD Can Clear-- ILady Falcons capture volleyball tourney title Bv TOM HARALDSEN LAYTON Clearfield High used powerful kills and blocks to capture the championship of the Layton-Clearfiel- d Volleyball Tournament Thursday night. The Lady Falcons went through the tournament undefeated, 9 knocking off Viewmont in the finals. And it was that final which pitted sister against sister. Clearfield's Joy Trussel, who led the team in kills, took on Viewmont coach Toni Bauman, her older sister, in the first confrontation between them this year. "Before the match, all I said to her was Good luck, may the best team win, Toni said afterwards. And at least this night, the best team did. The Falcons tandem of Trussel, Jina Kreimeyer and the player with my personal favorite name of the season, Promise McIntosh, pulled away quickly in game one. Kreimeyer served four winners, as Trussel successful killed two points to give the Falcons a 1 lead. That lead later progressed to after Trussel killed two more points and McIntosh blocked a two-da- y 15-- 8, 15-- 4-- 7-- 2 shot. But with Clearfield leading Viewmont fought back. JaNae Sorenson and Julie Stuart each killed a shot, and the Lady Vikes pulled to within From there, the Falcons took over. McIntosh served an ace, Kim Hill added another and Carma Lokenni a kill, and then a pair of kills by Trussel and Hill iced the 10-- game. Viewmont came out fired up in game two, taking a 0 lead on serves by Trudi Larsen. But McIntosh countered with four winners herself, including an ace, and when Trussel served three winners, it was 4 Falcons. The Vikes regained the lead briefly at 7 as Stuart served and Becky Yeates blocked a return. But Clearfield would not be denied, as McIntosh killed two more 4-- 7-- 8-- points, Kreimeyer delivered an ace, and then Trussel eventually scored the game winner on another ace. The double wing was shut quickly took them out of the game. Layton had run only three offensive plays and were up 21-- 0 and with a 35-- 7 halftime lead, there was no way possible getting back into the game. Junior quarterback, Troy Murray looked better than ever as he passed for over 120 yards and one touchdown to Chris Parrish. Murray also scored another one on the ground. He had two carries for over 40 yards. Murray also kicked six of six PATs and is now 16 of 16 on the year. The backfield duo of William Reid and Richard Lovelace were amazing too. Both had a touchdown a piece while Reid rushed for pre-seas- In the first game, Layton took a lead on serves by Rachel Greenland and Tina Zimmerman, but Lori Stacey stopped the run with a block, then helned the 9-- 1 Braves pull to 9-- 4. son. Wilson added, Its been a long time since Ive beaten Davis or any Kaysville team. Olsen, who played superbly at defensive nose guard, said, We can play with anyone if we really want to. Craig Hansen, the athletic director wandered through the locker room afterwards and made the statement, This will go down as the greatest win in Clearfield football history. It wasnt a tournament win or even a league game, but to beat those guys (Davis) is unbelievable. Ive been associated with Davis High for a long time, but have never seen the double wing shut down like that. It wasnt any fluke that we won this one. Clawson stated, There is a first tiipe for everything and we established a first tonight. Gardner commented afterwards, We were going to win this game for my best friend, Rodell Ortega. But Layton knotted things at and Bountiful coach Jill Avery called time out. 11-- 7, 11-1- 0. 10-- 10-al- l, Wilkinson followed with an ace, Stacey made three key digs to save the next point, and Kim Johnson 0 made two kills to make it Bountiful. For the night Davis gained 11 first downs to Clearfields five. The Darts also gained more total yards (187) than did Clearfield (176). But it was on defense where the Falcons won this one. Back at Davis High after most of the Darts had left the gym, Dickson contributed a few words only after the third loss since he became the head coach. What can I say, questioned Dickson, "We just got our fannies kicked. "They (Clearfield) played harder than we did and they won. Its just that simple. THINKING OF REFINANCING YOUR HOME MORTGAGE?
