By TOM HARALDSEN HILL AFB - It only happens every other year, so when Utahs largest employer, one with a lot of historical and current significance, holds an open house to showcase its goods, its quite an event. -- HILL AIR Force Base will open its gates this Saturday, with a special commemorative celebration titled The Price of Freedom, in honor of the 40th anniversary of the ending of World War II. Everything is being readied. Even defending national champion BYU moved its football game against UCLA to early evening so as not to conflict. (Actually, a national cable network is covering the game, so the open house has nothing to do with it, but it still works out nicely.) The schedule of events begins at 9 a.m. and runs through 4 p.m. Highlights will include the U.S. Air Force Honor Guard Drill team from Washington, D.C., as well as the U.S. Air Force Academy Wings of Blue Parachute Demon- stration Team and Sabre Drill Team. ANOTHER crowd favorite will be the Air Force Thunderbirds Ae- rial Demonstration Team, performing precision stunts in their red, white and blue 6 Falcon aircraft. Base spokesman Len Berry said other features of the event will include flyovers, ground aircraft displays, bands, exhibits, demonstrations, and food and souvenir concessions. He added that a number of restored aircraft and missiles will also be on display near the northwest corner of the base, at the site of the planned Hill Air Force Base Museum and Aerospace Park, which will make its public debut during the open house. The site is just east of the Roy exit on Force estimated that 165,000 attended the open house. This year, nearly 200,000 are expected. Cameras are welcome at the event, as the Air Force is careful not to let any classified information or equipment be seen by the public. Events actually will begin on Friday, as the Thunderbirds will arrive and perform a show for media representatives and others specially invited by the Air Force. By 7 a.m. on Saturday morning, other aircraft and equipment coming for the open house will be in place in anticipation of the 9 a.m. opening of the gates. AT 9:30 A.M., the Silver and Blue Band will begin a concert. A 8 aircraft will perrform at 9:35 a.m., followed by a model airplane demonstration at 9:50 a.m. The Air Force Honor Guard Drill T earn will begin its performance at 10 a.m. At 10:30 a.m., a bomb loading competition will begin, and from that time until 11 a.m., several aircraft, including s, UH-lN- s will perform and s, P-2- F-4- takeoffs, touchdowns and pas-sover- s.
