Show DAVIS REFLEX JOURNAL, AUGUST 15, 1984 Grm By TOM BUSSELBERG North County Editor FARMINGTON - Some south Clearfield parents are sick of having their children transplanted to a different school every year or so and claim there are more than -- enough for a new facility. SPOKESWOMAN Wendy Thor-stein addressing the board of education last week, said there were 654 youngsters under the age of 8 in the area that includes Melanie Acres and Julie Estates, in n, southwest Clearfield. Some 405 lots are filled with 70 more remaining, she said, pointing to probability of more instead of fewer kids in the area in the forsee-abl- e future, noting a total of 864 children there. Mfa INDICATING youngsters have attended three schools in the last five years while living in the same subdivision, Mrs. Thorsten said parents were becoming concerned for their "emotional security and a need for stability and teacher interaction that comes more easily from staying in one setting over several years. "We feel there are enough young people for us to have our own school, she said, while adding, "we are aware many schools are overcrowded. BOARD MEMBER Dee Forbes, whose precinct covers that area, called it a "different situation" there, indicating awareness of the problems there. "We are working to develop a plan to alleviate some of these problems. As soon as we Farmington Junior Sets Conditioning With volleyball and wrestling competition beginning within two weeks of the opening of school, a conditioning class will be conducted at the school for 10 days before school begins. THE TWO coaches of these sports, Mr. Packer and Mrs. Stott art will conduct the program. Full cost of the program for each student will be $10 for the 10 sessions which will begin Aug. 20 and end Aug. 31. Each session will last Vi hours per day. The first session will begin at 8:30 a.m. at the school with the starting time of each session thereafter to be determined at the first meeting. The class will be open to all students who will be attending Farmington Junior High School who are interested in trying out for these teams when school begins. 1 can work it out, we hope we can provide a school there. And Board Pres. Sheryl Allen emphasized by law the board must plan and noted prepare a some area parents have met with Supt. Lawrence Welling. She said the issue will be discussed by early next year with principals and others and try to make a decfive-ye- ar ision." WE WILL ask Dr. (John S.) White to check into buying a site-- we want those children to be (taken care of), she continued, referring to the assistant superintendent over buildings and grounds activities. Mrs. Thoresten said Clearfield City has purchased a 17 acre park site in the area, "for our future, urging the school district to follow The Layton Hills Mall will present its First Annual Criterium Bike Race on Saturday, Aug. 18. We want to help ensure the most for our kids learning years, she added. THE QUESTION arises "Why go to all the work and expense of redevelopment of Main Street if their parking area is to be taken away, by parallel parking. What is right for some is wrong for others. THE CONTROVERSY continues and has for several years. The financial end has not been a concern as yet, but it is a major factor and concern to the Mayor and Council. The state will build the road, but the many other expenses, which will be very costly, will be very real as well. These financial expenses will surface when the design and plan is finalized. As an effort to try other parking alternatives on a trial basis, Center Street between Main Street and 100 West Street will be made one way, going west, and angle parking spaces will be marked, then parking needs and traffic patterns will be monitored.
