No one needs to be told that Americas economic health is heavily dependent upon the physical health of our people. Birth defects are not only a major health problem; they are an economic problem of staggering proportions to ones community and to the AS nation. THEY ARE the second greatest destroyer of life in the United States, outranked only by heart disease, and greater than cancer and stroke combined. In economic terms, however, birth defects have more impact upon the productivity of American people because they strike at the beginning of the life span, whereas cardiovascular diseases are primarily afflictions of the later years of life. As a result, birth defects are estimated to cost this nation some $80 billion annually in lost lifetime earnings. There are other, equally devastating consequences: some 1,200,000 persons are hospitalized in the United States each year for treatment of birth defects at an $800 million. NOT ALL victims require institutional care, of course, but some 15 million saying, anyone who has bothered to look knows worker ants have no wrinkles. was Americans suffer from birth defects serious enough to affect their daily lives. These include about 3 million mentally retarded, four million diabetics, one million with congenital bone, muscle or joint disease, 500,000 totally or partially blind, 750,000 with impaired hearing, 350,000 YET IN a brief 23 years, the March of Dimes led a successful assault on this centuries-old scourge and eliminated it as a health problem in this country. Similarly, in the field of birth defects, great strides are being made in prevention. New vaccines are reducing the toll of congenital rubella and RH blood disease. Using the same know-hoand research technique developed in the crusade against polio, and given the same public support, the March of Dimes will eventually overcome birth defects, np By NORMA PREECE 376-875- 1 and Mrs. George Gage sons Tim and Brett of Basking Ridge, New Jersey will arrive Thursday March 25 to be houseguests of her parents Judge and Mrs. Mr. and two Thomley K.
