Crowing pains After 25 years of shaping music to share a message as the head of one of the world's most prestigious choirs. Mormon Tabernacle Oioir director Jerold Ottley is passing the baton. Though there has been no official announcement made by Ottley or the choir's sponsor. The Giurch of Jesus Girist of Latter-da- y Saints, about his October retirement, Nobodys keeping it a secret," Ottley said. There is a need at church headquarters to make a lot of changes with their music programs and since this year both myself and Robert Bowden qualified for retirement this is the best time to make changes. After a satisfying career using his talents and those of his choir members to share the message of the LDS Giurchs beliefs. Ottley feels comfortable leaving the choir in the capable hands of current assistant directors Craig Jessop and Mack Wilberg. Ottley however, is not abandoning the choir completely He. along with his wife, JoAnn will be running the new choir training school. There, old and new choir members will review and practice the basics of choral music under the instruction of the Ottleys and other guest lecturers. Each choir member will spend three months in the music school and during that time be a part of a new LDS musical group, the Temple Square Chorale. About 30 new choir members and about 30 veteran choir members will make up the chorale when it assembles twice' each year from January to September. The veteran choir members will rotate through the chorale every six years. Music has been such a large part of Ottley 's life it would be out of character to leave choral music totally behind. Everything I am is because of what music has done to me. It gives me an unusual view. Music strikes to the core of the human spirit. Ive always desired to work with people's spirit and music has been a great tool to allow me to do that," he , said. I knew my life would involve music long before I knew I was going to be a choir directoii Ottley said. When I was six years old. my mother began to teach me the piano. Advertisers have been informed that their deadlines have changed, and theyre adjusting. People placing classifieds over the past few days have encountered new deadlines and new rates. And the press crews have been gearing up to be able to print a far larger press run on Wednesdays than theyve ever done before. The editorial staff already spent last week observing our new deadlines to make sure we could continue providing the news through the changeover. Things actually worked out pretty well. But those who will be most affected by the new changes will be the distribution people and our carriers. I would play and she would accompany me. We always shared a great deal of lov e for the spirit of music, he said. I was introduced to choral music in college and fell in love. Ottley said. His first job as a high school choral director was at Bountiful High School. My work with the choir has shaped my life very much because Ive been in the limelight. Ive tried to shape my life to reflect those things, the good values, the church and the choir are trying to communicate. So we ask you patience with us as we go through the growing pains of the next two or three weeks. Weve been working to make sure that every part of the switch goes as smoothly as possible, but there are bound to be a few glitches. Whatever the problems may turn out to be, we hope they are minor and that 'C'O M (JOZ V T r) communicate good values and feelings w hether the music is religious or secular. Ottley s favorite thing about working with the chon has always been the people. It's the people who make up the choir that are the most interesting. We need to set clear standards for student performance, being aware of what external sources we can use to benchmark and validate our standards. We need to make sure these standards identify- what the students need to be able to do and what they know at key points in their school career. We also need to establish an assessment process that measures success at regular intervals that explicitly tie to the standards we have set. We need to be sure the process assesses Kith knowledge and skill. That it uses multiple, on going measures that are reliable and v alid. There needs to be a range of achiev ement targets assessed that represent what the local community feels are important educational outcomes. It needs to measure more than minimum competencies, provide progress data for every student and how the results of the assessments will be used. We also need to know how the results will be shared with teachers and curriculum developers and how it will be used to alter instruction to focus on the greatest needs. We need to establish a strong accountability process. We need to determine what policy and resources we have provided to include data analysis as an essential component in our districts staff evaluation process and how we tie staff and student success to rewards as well as lack of success to visible change. We need to keep the community involv ed in these processes and include its input as well. We especially need to provide individual student data to parents m a cumulative format that can be tracked over time.
