These worms, more properly called cankerworms, are abundant on Gambel oak. maple, box elder, and some fruit trees. Cankerworms feed on leaves and can defoliate a tree. They often drop dow n from leav es on silk strands. Cankerworms are sometimes called loopers because they move in a looping manner along a leaf. Cankerworm feeding damage can be significant on fruit trees and shade trees in residential yards. Most trees can w ithstand the d loss of up to of their foliage. If cankerworm feeding damage will exceed this amount, control should be considered. Homeowners can use a hose end sprayer to reach trees up to 30 feet. Commercial pest control operators are also available to spray trees. Heavily damaged trees will often send out a new set of leav es in June when the cankerworms have gone. Repeated defoliation over several years can seriously damage or kill a tree. One of the safest and most eflective products to use for cankerworm control is Dipel or Thuricide. These products are a biological control that is specific for caterpillar insects. Other common garden pesticides can also be used such as diazinon. sevin, pyrethroid, Orthene, or dursban. In heavily infested areas, a dormant oil spray early next spring would be useful. Always read and follow label directions. one-thir- I |
