Laura says she decided to become part of the program because she wanted to learn more English and, in addition, she wanted to know about the United States and how people here live. At the same time the Deters family thought having someone in their home who spoke Spanish would give their daughter Heather who attends Millcreek Junior High a chance to practice Spanish, too. Laura's conclusion after four weeks as the guest of Caroline and Gerald Deters is that things here are "a little different and a little the same." Laura and the Deters family have done just about everything that is possible to do in a four week period. They've attended a rodeo, visited parks, attended family birthday party, celebrated the Fourth of July and the 24th of July. Laura and Heather have gone together to girls camp in the Piutes and to a youth conference in Brighton. 'The girls were very friendly," Laura said. "They all tried to help me understand what we were doing in camp." "IF it a place of historical interest or has a scenic view, we'e probably been there during the four,. weeks she has been here with us," said Mrs. Deters. Talking about birthday parties, Laura said that there are cakes served at birthday parties in Spain but they look different. She also remarked that although many of the same foods are served here, the taste is quite different because the Americans use more sauces and more spices than she is accustomed to. American foods also tends to be more mixed together while in Spain they are served separately. Hamburgers and French fries were her favorite foods along with everything cooked in the Deters home. "American ice cream is also very good," she said. Arby's roast beef sandwiches also rated high and she loved Dr.Pepper which is not available in Spain. "Family life in Utah is the same as in Spain but different because things are done in a different manner," Laura said "The peoplce here are very united. They always seem to do things together. Laura picked Utah as the place she would visit because her father helped her choose and he said that the state was very pretty and that the people in Utah would be very nice. iL ne of the things that Laura and 'Heather enjoyed doing together was attending movies. Laura though a little "Jurasic Park "was "Free she but enjoyed frightening Willy" because it was about the ocean. While all the popular movies are also shown in Spain, the sound there is dubbed in Spanish. Laura found it especially interesting to hear what each actor's voice really sounded like. Shopping was another important part of the visit. Laura wanted Levi pants and Rebok shoes for herself and Nike shoes for her brother. Those brands are available in Spain but are much more expensive there. "She tried on every style and brand," Mrs. Deters recalled. "Just like an American girl she knew what she wanted and just how she wanted the clothes to fit. Telemarketers don't leave messages, but this won't keep them from calling back and you may anger your friends and relatives if you screen your calls. The only way to really stop them is to talk to each one long enough to ask to be taken off their list. Ultimately the best way to reduce the amount of junk mail and calls into your house is to keep yourself off mailing and phoning lists to begin with. This means every time you apply for a credit card, subscribe to a magazine, donate to a charity or just about anything where you sign your name, you have to specifically ask that your name not be sold or rented. This includes warranty and registration cards for new products. Heather Deters of Bountiful and Laura Alvarez of Madrid, Spain had four weeks to explore the south Davis County area together. Alvarez came to America to be with Deters to learn more about the country she had only read about in books and seen in the movies. 555 W.
