Show Sportstaculcir September BMSB BfflBBBeir: 'Bit by Keith Duncan Jimmy Carter may like peanut farms and Bob Wheeler is a nut about computers but Neil Miller of Weber High prefers dishing out those bruising tackles on the grid iron and hauling in an occasional touchdown pass. Im like the majority of guys playing sports in high school: I know Im not the most talented or gifted athlete around, but for me, Im trying to enjoy my three years of athletics because it may be the last chance I have to compete competitively, said Miller, And Im trying to give it all Ive got. Actually, the fans and followers of this Weber High athlete think hes just as talented as most other grid stars in Region One. But to think Neil wasnt ever really involved in competitive sports until the eighth grade in junior high is something worth consideration. From that prefreshman year until this, his senior season, the progress might be compared to someting like the way fuel prices have progressed since 1930. His junior high years were spent at North Ogden Junior High and that's where Coach Gary Stokes wrote a page in Neils young life. Coach Stokes helped give me direction and helped me a lot more than probably what he realizes now. He saw that I had a chance to compete in sports. Barley Supports Teams It isnt easy though to lose, just ask Neil. So far this fall, Weber is winless in four starts on the gridiron. Each of those defeats have been narrow ones, probably the most difficult to swallow. Despite the fact we have lost these close games, there are people at school who never quit giving us players support. The guy Im most thankful for is Ron Burley. (Burley instructs seminary classes at Weber). Its great guys like this that never stop supporting Page may be my BasH cBnance' you. To tell the truth, Id be lost without him, said Neil. Burley was once active in Weber High sports himself. Athletics has taught me how to pay the price to be a success. There is no greater feeling than to give your all in a week of practice then go out Friday night or afternoon and show the crowds what youve learned and what youve practiced, stated Miller. Lives in Pleasant View Neil is the son of Albert and LaRee Miller of Pleasant View. The family has resided there most of their lives. One of the coolest things that ever happened to me was the time Bro. (Ron) Burley called me to wish a happy birthday to me. It was even on a Saturday. I mean, the guy really cares. And when my brother died, he was right there. Itll be hard to repay all he has done for me. All of Neils brothers except one performed on Weber High football squads. Living in such a big family has helped me excell in sports ah.). We didnt have all the ' jives and fancy cars. So money to buy four-w- heel while some kids get their lacks with these things, Ive gotten mine playing spo.ts, said Neil. Music will always be an avid part of Millers lifestyle. The right kind of music before an athletic event is something that highly pleases him. Neil is an avid disco dancer and is much better than your average Friday and Saturday night disco-freaHe has worked patiently with Dixie Coggins and her dance studio in learning the art of the dance. In junior high Neil suffered an injury to htelmee and today has developed arthritis in it. He plays in pain in k. many games. Dave Brooks, who assists in the Weber football scene, commented on Miller, His Improvement since most if they Ms sophomore year would mtnd-bogg- le only knew the guy. Today hes one of our outside linebackers and is doing a terrific job. Actually, hes the best blocking tight end we have on offense. Glen Prisk, another assistant coach, stated, Neil is one player we have who goes through practice with a good deal of intensity and that sure helps the drills. Perhaps sometimes hes over intense. Neil is the kind of guy that could play almost any position if we needed Mm.
