Show i THE 14 CITIZEN SUPERVISOR A BUSY MAN An analysis of the size of the Supervisor's job is being made for three ' National Forests in Southern Utah. This analysis, so far as developed, has brought out some interesting facts relative to the use of these lands by the public for recreation and the extent to which they are used by livestock and big game. These three Forests embrace approximately 3,196,000 acres and during the past year they were visited by at least 135,000 people who found relief from the summer heat of the valleys and enjoyed the various recreation features offered. On these same Forests, during the past year, approximately four million feet of timber was cut, 208,000 sheep, 34,500 cattle and horses, 1,250 elk, and 29,000 deer found their summer pasturage. The best records the local Forest Officers have been able to secure shows that about 55 elk and 3,460 deer were killed on these three Forests during the huntinv season of 1928. The local Forest Officers cooperate with the State Game Department in protecting the game on these areas. There is a great diversity of activities on each Forest, the proper administration for which the local supervisor is directly responsible. It requires very careful planning in use of time to enable him to give proper attention to his many duties during the available time each year. He must so plan his work as to avoid the possibility of minor matters getting more time and attention than are warranted by tlie needs of the more important problems. A conference is now in progress at Richfield at which Supervisor Carl A. Mattsson, Assistant Supervisor Chester J. Olsen, Ranger A. L. Taylor and Clerk W. C. Ellis Fishlake; Supervisor J. W. Humphrey Man-t- i; Supervisor Orange A. Olsen of the Dixie Forests, and Assistant District Foresters, C. N. Woods, R. Fj. Gery, and Ernest Winkler of the Ogden Office are in attendance. The purpose of this conference is to analyze the size of the Supervisor's job on each of these Forests and to develop a plan of work for the coming year. These plans are designed to organize the jobs that must be done from year to year and at the same time determine the extra jobs that it will be possible to undertake period. during the next . five-ye- ar If Mr. Hoover is really having a lot of trouble building his cabinet, he can find plenty of store box politicians who can fix him up in fifteen minutes.
