Show THE ZEPHYRJAN-FE- outrage, in Utah and across the country, may just convince other politicians that this bill must be stopped. The Utah Senators squeaked their bill through energy committee on December 5, and it now awaits action on the full Senate floor. The Utah Senators made cosmetic changes to the bill to ward off criticism, but the legislation remains an extraordinary attack on the Red Rock wilderness and on the 1964 Wilderness Act itself. On the House side, as this is written, Hansen has the bill listed on the schedule for a full floor vote before the end of 1995. USA Weekend- The latest show of public support for Utah wilderness came with an article in USA Weekend, a Sunday magazine included in newspapers across the country. The piece featured a debate between Robert Redford supporting protecting 5.7 million acres under HJL 1500 and Utah Senator Orrin Hatch arguing for opening the wilderness to development (the latter photographed in spiffy cowboy garb) and asked readers to write or email their position on the issue. The final tally: For H.R. 1500 (5.7 million acres of wilderness) For HU. 1745S. 884 (bring on the bulldozers) 22,922 votes 1,772 votes. What You Can Do: Hie Utah Representatives' Attack On Wilderness: The Utah delegation's attack on the Red Rock Wilderness could be stopped with a presidential veto. Please write President Clinton and ask him to veto the Utah Public Lands Management Act, HR 1745 and S. 884. Address: White House, 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue NW, Washington, D.C., 20500. Or call: What You Can Do: Hansen's Sneak Attack on Wilderness. Representative Jim Hansen is pursuing a back-u- p legislative plan to gouge Utah wilderness, just in case he and the other Utah politicians fail to pass their Utah wilderness annihilation bill This proposal is worse, because it also threatens National Paries, and would apply to public lands across the country. Revised Statute 2477 granted states a right to construct highways across public lands. Repealed in 1976, the moldy legislation was raised from the dead by wilderness opponents that now claim that cow paths and snowmobile trails are actually "public highways." Hansen's bill would turn this spooky interpretation into law. What you can do: The bill has been referred to the House Constitution Please write subcommittee members Representatives Charles Canady and Pat Schroeder and ask them to hold hearings on the bill, as well as express your concern over the bill.
