Where could vou make cuts In spending? Dave: I think government In Grand County Is working as effectively as It can. Weve got some of the most dedicated elected officials that you could want People might scoff at this, but I know theyre putting their own money Into their operation. At the film commission and economic development, they put In hours and hours of overtime and arent compensated. Ive put In money out of my own pocket, and do It willingly, because this Is my home. Not to any great extent, but more than they're required to do. I think we can be more productive, but that takes more money. It takes money to make money. I think theres a need for a full-ticounty commissioner, but I don't think I But for what weve got, think we're doing a good Job. ECONOMY Zephyr: What can Grand Countv do to develop a sustainable economy, and do vou really believe that a countv commissioner can have that great an effect on achieving that goal? Dave: Not really. A commissioner can help facilitate It Bring It about sooner and In a more timely manner. And smoother. But It's my belief that economics will go as they please. You can fight them and put them off, but Im not sura any one person can say, well, the community In this direction. And I dont know that we should. We Im going tore-dire- ct should be flexible enough to accommodate what comes, and farsighted enough to get the Jump In. I dont think we can ever say, were the mountain bike mecca of the world, or the film Industry of the world, or oil and gas, or uranium, or peaches, or anything. We have to be all of that Some will go on the backbumer for awhile and focus on one. And thats the hardest thing our community has to do. Will It be I think we can achieve that Moab will continue to live and prosper. easy? No. If were all flexible enough, If we give each other enough elbow room, It can work. Norma Nunn Julie Bierschied (w) 259-649- 3 (h) 259-727- 5 (w) 259-649- 3 (h) 259-567- 0 Hows that? MOAB IN 2000 A.D. Zephyr: How do vou see Moab In 10 years? Dave: I think Moab will be one of the most amazing communities, In all honesty. I think were going to see a tine arts community rubbing shoulders with a hard hat community, rubbing shoulders with a tourist community. I think we will have eased Into our roles enough to be comfortable with what others are doing. We have the most beautiful country In the world. But we also have the richest because of the minerals. I think that by working together well have a bright future ahead. On the other hand, It could all go In the toilet tomorrow. KNUTSON APPRAISES BIERSCHIED AND KNUTSON and then give me Zephyr: What do vou think vour strengths and weaknesses are, a similar analysis of Dave Bierschied. vour opponent Dave: Lets do weaknesses first, so I can end on a high note. I dont do well at I like to talk writing letters and going through voluminous documents. Im a people person. I to people. Politically, I speak my mind too much, although actually think thats a virtue. I but I I can get along with Just about everybody. dont always see dont think Ive ever alienated anybody. I dont think people are stupid. I have an ability to tor a get things out of people that they do well. Im good at mediating and searching under of four my belt, years experience meeting of minds. Those are my strengths. Ive got and I enjoy this Job. eye-to-e- ye, Zephyr: How about accomplishments and mistakes. Dave: The Incinerator Issue taught me volumes about when to back off on things. You cant force things down people's throats. Thera was a big swing In the county, but I thought It was still a good thing, and I kind of still believe that But there comes a time the people make the decisions. That really sunk Into me and Ive when you have to say tried to learn that lesson. I need to be Another weakness Is that Im too willing to go along with people I can In I'll Is one more future The make mistakes. the thing promise tougher. Zephyr: How about Blerschleds strengths and weaknesses? Dave: He has experience on the City Council. Thats a strength. Budgeting experience, and being In the public eye. I would think his weakness Is not understanding the role of county government Of course, I didn't understand It either when I got Into It Thats something to learn. Some of my accomplishments that I'm proud of Is the equestrian center. Ive worked real hard on that and feel I was Instrumental. Of course, that might turn out to be a millstone, but I dont think so. Getting the mineral lease monies back. Some people don't agree with the roads, but simply getting that money back to the community Is a real plus. At least now we can argue among ourselves. I'm proud that I had the guts enough to see we had a Jail and go after IL Ive helped the seniors; that's been a real concern of mine. Mostly, Just being able to be a listening ear for people. I think Ive done a good Job. I hope I get back In. If I don't, I'll do something else. |
