Show THE ZEPHYRJAN-FE- PAGE 25 1996 B . rams of his age group had died, and he no longer had the strength to challenge and defeat younger rams for the right to breed. n While browsing one day high on the slopes of a large canyon, he was startled by smells and sounds he had never before experienced. The smells and sounds were those of sheep, but there was something different about them. And then he' saw them: a large group of sheep that looked white and fuzzy. And there were dogs, unlike any coyote he had ever seen, keeping the sheep moving along in a group. Stranger still were the humans on horses following some distance behind. Overcome by curiosity and perhaps a final pulse of hormones in his system, he moved cautiously down five slope to meet the peculiar fuzzy sheep. He nuzzled with a few and walked along with them for some distance, until the barking of an . approaching dog spooked him back up the slope to security. He watched as the domestic sheep, dogs and shepherds disappeared from view down the canyon. A couple weeks later the old ram developed a cough that became more persistent as the days progressed. The simple act of charging up onto his favorite boulder perch left him with heavy labored breathing, and overwhelmed him with fatigue. His body had never been exposed to, and never developed any resistance to, the germs he had acquired from his brief mingling with the herd of domestic sheep. The pneumonia progressed rapidly. It was hard to breathe, harder still to move. One morning he awoke with a deep shiver, as solid gray clouds blew in on a chilly wind from where the cold storms came. Mustering his last bit of strength, he struggled to the spot where he had always innately felt the safest And there he lay down and breathed his last rattling breath. Raindrops streaked the stony faces of the four bighorn sheep forms etched into the varnished sandstone wall behind his lifeless form. late-autum- 702 S.
