There Is no good reason to let any small businesses remain In southern Utah but ones. sendee-relate- d There Is no good reason to graze cattle on scenic public lands. STRANGER IN A STRANGE LAND For some time now, I've been attempting a futility: seeking to educate a largely environmentally-oriente- d readership to my way of thinking. And I guess Ifs getting to me. I wonder what It would be like to write for an audience who agreed with everything I said? Such a nice ego trip that would be. I see no signs that my efforts here in the Zephyr have achieved any greater understanding, any minute shifting of hard lines as we grapple with public land use Issues. Rather, H seems now that opposing skies are even farther apart than they used to be. WALU types hate everyone new In townnot like themwho don't understand their love for the land. SUWA types hate historic land usersthose not like themwho don't understand their love for the land. I'm bitter because Moab apparently has an environmental aristocracy which la head and shoulders above the common folk in town who only care about selfish things like a Job, paying bills, being able to stay Instead of move. This lofty environmental nobility looks down on the rest of us who don't know any better, whose crass materialism drives us to businesses to prosper. distorted belief systems where we want our I'm disillusioned because Ifs obvious that letting everyone enjoy our National Parka and National Forests and National Monuments and State Parks and other recreation and wild-df- e areas around Moab Isn't enough. Reusing serviceable Items that are discarded at the dump Isn't really recycling, Ifs Just saving products that someone else could start using now. This distasteful "scrounging" ethic has nothing to do with true recycling, which only refers to returning aluminum cane, glass, cardboard and paper products to a middleman who tries to sell them to a manufacturer who can't hardly afford to pay anything for them, so that large quantities of energy supplies can be expended to remake these materials Into new Items for us to throw away at the dump so nobody else can make use of them. so-call- ed non-renewab- le There Is no good reason to chain any scenic public lands.
