Show THE ZEPHYR APRIL 1990 PAGE 14 earth day in moab education and celebration by Diane Fouts Twenty years ago this month, over 20 million Americans participated in the first Earth Day, rallying under the banner of Mother Nature for the health of the planet. This April, Earth Day 1990 hopes to involve more than 100 million people worldwide. Moab plans to contribute its share to Earth Day this year. A proclamation by the City Council recognizes the need for education and awareness of what each individual can do to maintain and Improve the quality of the environment. It sets aside April 21 as Earth Day in Moab. Local schools will also be involved in Earth Week activities. A poster and essay contest sponsored by the Democratic Party for elementary through high school students has the theme "Challenges for the Next 20 Years." An Earth Day assembly will be held for high school students on Thursday, April 19. Earth Day events will begin in Castle Valley with a for cyclists riding to Moabs ceremony at the mailboxes and a send-o- ff Festival in City Park. Alice Drogin of Castle Valley Nursery is offering free small cottonwood trees at the ceremony to those willing to plant and nurture them. Moabs Earth Day Festival will be held at the City Park (100 West & 400 North) on Saturday, April 21, 1990 from noon to 6 p.m. This site was chosen to encourage participants to use human-power- ed transportation to get to the festival. Please leave your cars at home and come to the park on your bicycle, skateboard, roller skates, pogo stick, little red wagon, or your own two feet. If Castle Valley residents can ride their bicycles 23 miles to attend, surely we can make It a few blocks. Bring a picnic lunch in recyclable or reusable container (forget styrofoam plates!) and make a day of it! A major part of the Earth Day Festival will be a ONE-DA- Y collection of recyclable materials. Start saving paper, glass and aluminum cans now. Recyclable paper includes bags, cardboard and newspaper (no glossy paper please.) Glass items should have the metal caps and rings removed, but for this collection there is no need to sort by color. Please crush aluminum cans to save space; aluminum foil cannot be accepted. Recyclables will be collected from noon to 6 p.m. The Earth Day Festival is a full afternoon of entertaining and A dramatization of The Loray by Dr. Seuss will be featured. A wide selection of local musicians are slated to appear throughout the afternoon. Participants are also invited to bring their acoustic instruments for a jam session. The middle school will display energy conserving inventions and creations. Prizes for the winning posters and essays in the "Challenge for the Next 20 Years" contest will be awarded to young artists and writers. Contest posters will be on display throughout the afternoon. "New Games will be played. These are participatory (nonspectator) games that stress cooperation and fun. Everybody plays, everybody wins. tree-plant- ing educational events: A hearty and cyclists is planned.
